The message from the White House this morning is that, once again, it falls on ordinary American citizens to remain calm and professional when dealing with the heavily armed agents of the government because they are very emotional and might fly off into a murderous rage at the slightest insult.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best. It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Not to put too fine a point on it but the *reason* there are people who continue to mask is because we collectively have not taken steps to install better ventilation and technology across the board (in buildings, on public transit, etc) to clean the air of harmful airborne pathogens (incl measles!)

This is my biggest problem with how people are approaching AI. People who know better than, "The computer gave me an answer so it must be right," are actually treating things coming out of these tools as gospel. It's the false confidence "full self driving" marketing effect at work here.

A technology that looks futuristic and does some cool tricks, but using it hamstrings you in an extremely embarrassing way.

I understand the self interest that AI salesmen have to push their product, but the grasping way they’re doing it — the internet version of a traveling salesmen putting his foot in the door so you can’t close it — is only going to drive more people away.

GenAI from the same Big Tech firms is also designed with specific user interface choices to "hook you for hours". All the negatives of social media & more. Don't buy the "it's inevitable" argument. We have agency to choose how we use tech and it's better to make them get it right.
