Hidden wonders: my fascinating encounters with the Bittern Elusive and majestic, the Bitternโ€™s booming call echoes across Minsmereโ€™s reeds โ€“ a symbol of hope and conservation success

Leslie Cater watched two Bitterns perform their courtship display โ€“ something few people ever see. Half an hour of slow, beautiful ritual. He'll never forget it. ๐Ÿ’›

Whole fucking thing makes me sick to my stomach. An abject fucking liar, a man who lies as easily as he fucking breathes, threatening an organisation which strives for truthfulness. And plastic patriots like the Mail and Farage urging him on. Jackels.

1578 years ago, on the 6th of November 447, an earthquake hit Constantinople destroying much op its walls and 57 towers. Another quake followed next January. The presence of Attila the Hun in the Balkans prompted repairs, supported by chariot-racing factions, to be finished in 60 days. #otd ๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ

In 1959, the first commercially successful document copier, the Xerox 914, went on sale. It came with a small fire extinguisher as the machine had a tendency to catch fire.

Polychromatic wall, C19, Bishops Hill, Ipswich.

There are a fair number of things I dislike, political and religious extremism, football half-and-half scarves and Radio 4 comedies for example. But few things annoy me as much as tag graffiti, the human equivalent of dogs marking their territory.

When my dad took his French degree in 1955, the literature paper asked for three essays โ€œone of which should be in Frenchโ€. He wrote โ€œโ€˜shouldโ€™ does not mean โ€˜mustโ€™, Iโ€™m short of time and my English is better than my Frenchโ€ and then wrote three essays in English. Next year, they changed the wording.

Leaving the ECHR wonโ€™t โ€œTake Back Controlโ€ โ€“ it will hand your rights to politicians The myths are seductive, the reality is very different โ€“ without the ECHR your freedoms rest on whichever Home Secretary wakes up grumpy

๐Ÿ‘ Today marks 75 years since the creation of the ECHR.

We should celebrate the vision that Winston Churchill showed in recognising everyoneโ€™s human rights.

But there are now calls for the UK to leave ECHR.

As with Brexit, leaving would strip all of us of fundamental rights.

In 2018 a Polish environmental charity put a SIM card in a GPS tracker to follow the migratory pattern of a white stork. They lost track with the stork and later received a phone bill for $2,700: someone in Sudan had taken the SIM from the tracker and made over 20 hours of calls.

A spade, skull and coffin on the headstone of Jeptha Waller at Ramsholt, Suffolk. It's suggested he was the sexton or gravedigger, but in fact the Wallers were wealthy landowners, and they're symbols of mortality. The date, January 3rd 1748/9, is from the days when the New Year began on March 25th.

Can you imagine the United States ever doing something like this?

There really is something about Their Graces, the Dukes of York

There have been 11. Of which:

2 were killed on the battlefield
1 was probably/possibly murdered in the Tower
1 was executed by Parliament (after he had succeeded as king)
1 was deposed (ditto)
2 showed promise but really went to seed

Trumpโ€™s anti-truth crusade is not just an attack on facts โ€“ itโ€™s an unravelling of the Enlightenment | Polly Toynbee The US president, JD Vance and Nigel Farage seem to believe that checking facts is a form of censorship. Trumpโ€™s attack on facts is dangerous - and weโ€™re already seeing how it spreads to the UK. This has to stop. โš ๏ธ
