That's one of the things that drives me most nuts about self described leftists. They're too absorbed in in-group signaling than being able to read between the lines and get good things to happen under branding they hate. Know your political environment and manipulate it cleverly.

I'm sure this is deeply ingrained in a lot of communist thinking, but people have gotta be savvy enough about America to not couch it in those terms in the least. Branding is important, and the self-identifying communist contingent isn't a winning coalition. Stealth that shit if you must.

I think we're seeing a few of those popping up. But people are starving for that beyond their material needs and I think it can be a good antidote to the fascist hangover.

It's not something you can totally solve though policy, but I genuinely think you could run a very successful positive campaign around a story built on how we're all looking for connection and community.

It's a shame their more Halloween-centric albums just simply aren't as good as this one. Then again, few punk(-adjacent) albums are.

My biggest comfort is that I've been old and hating most major trend since I was a teenager. I've come around on a semi-decent amount, and I'm even older and even crankier now for sure, but it's still nice to know I'm out of touch mainly because I've always been. Beating the system!

Dracula turns into a bat to avoid detection or for selfish personal travel purposes, whereas I would turn into a bat to pollinate local plants and help balance our precious ecosystem. Just one of several ways that I am morally superior to Dracula.

It just sucks to feel old and cranky when I do genuinely enjoy being challenged by art and having my horizons expanded. I hope I'm not being calcified in my middle age as another out of touch old white dude, but I'm not in any way immune to it.

The most likely read, though, is that a lot of this is just Not For Me and that's alright, even if it makes me feel alienated from the things that most excited me in my younger days. There's still a thousand things that are for me.

Like, maybe it's punk as fuck to hear all the world's music blaring through a shitty cellphone speaker or have everything exist in some hyperreal hollow digital space. I do think there's artistic merit in it since it mirrors the lives we actually live. But it also feels as exhausting as that reality

That's probably always happened, and some of my favorite music has been in these cross cultural dialogues that in some ways "dilutes" both, but also boosts both. But I feel like there was more dynamism in all spheres in the past. Now I just feel like the algorithm and commercialism are inescapable.

Which is a shame, because I feel like we're also seeing the rise of a lot of regional musics outside the typical Eurocentric/American canon take hold, but so much of it feels filtered through flattened top 40 American pop aesthetics.

I mean, there's a 75% chance I'm just a middle aged white dude yelling at cloud with all of this. But I genuinely think so much music has been flattened so that even the boldest stuff feels overly familiar because the internet soup has permeated everything to a narrow few touchstones.
