The real Frank Dux would've gone, but also concocted an elaborate yarn about foiling a nefarious plot of some kind as part of the visit.

Well, neither do I, but my point is that we treat drunk driving a certain way because it is irrefutably proven to put bystanders at risk of losing their lives.

Anecdotally, everyone I know who's ever gotten a DUI has been a suburban white person driving home from a bar. The "hot spots" are what they are. Cops don't avoid busting drunk drivers leaving a bar just because that bar has mostly white patrons.

No, I get that. We do have a large and unrefutable data set showing the actual danger to bystanders of drunk driving, which is not always the case with drug laws and policy.

That's funny, because I don't believe he's a Democrat, either.

...service workers and patrons should punitively atone for those original sins, as it were.

I could support something like that, at least as a grace period after such a law took effect. I think some of the root problem is structural (municipalities allowing bars to operate in areas that are exclusively car-accessible, mandating parking minimums at bars, etc.), and I don't think that...

The distinction is that you're not at risk of killing an innocent person by smoking fentanyl on the light rail.

Most first-time DUIs plead down to Neg 1 which doesn't come with fines or jail time, but does come with some kind of mandatory classes or meetings.

Yeah, I truly understand the emotional attachment to JP, but if Colt comes screaming out of the gate, his starting spot should not be safe. Forcing a rookie phenom to play out of position to spare the feelings of a declining veteran is a weird fantasy in some people's heads.

Eh, Costco paid for my college education because they have a huge scholarship fund to enhance diversity at the schools the founders attended. There are cheaper, easier ways to pay lip service to diversity if that’s all they’re doing.

…due to structural reasons that are not the fault of people who will lose their jobs when those businesses close. Consideration for them is not unreasonable, in addition to recognizing the benefits of lowering the legal limit.

We’ve also, for example, allowed bars to operate in places that are primarily accessible via driving personal vehicles, and that’s 100% a failure of the state. A realignment to β€œyou cannot legally drive after even one drink” is going to shock the service industry…

Unstated in this piece is that Mr Clean is retiring in lieu of facing a disciplinary hearing for firing his service weapon during a fight at a high school basketball game that he was refereeing

Yeah, it's gonna be "go pick up dinner and then enjoy a few minutes in a quiet house before the kids get back from swim practice" for me.

This is not a good precedent, and I will speculate that if it was a rank-and-file City employee there would've been real consequences, at least from the City itself.

This slap on the wrist is inviting high level officials to do stuff like this again the future.

Hey, that's the same reason I'm not going to watch it!

If he does shit his pants mid-speech, I'll just wait for the gifs and memes.

I can't think of a stronger endorsement for the cameras than for pro-surveillance councilmembers to request them posted outside their own homes.

Although that might run afoul of their partners, children, neighbors, and guests, who may not feel the same level of support!

Hard dose of reality here.

It's also not going to disrupt the market for drugs in the U.S. or the flow of weapons from the U.S. to the cartels.

He's right that real solutions seem counter-intuitive (to anyone approaching this from a drug war standpoint).

I mean, I think it all ties into a general lack of public restrooms, especially in the evening. But no matter how you contextualize it, urinating on public transit is one way to put people off of public transit.

Oh, I don't recall if I pegged it as sports-related or not at the time.

I don't think the visibly homeless component of the anecdote is the problem. I've seen a drunk, ostensibly housed person pee on a bus before.

I’m not sure how much is breaking through the sunday news cycle about Mexico but remember the USA puts all this pressure to get the cartel leaders and provides absolutely no support with aftermath like this. Who buys the drugs? USA. Who supplies their guns? USA also

Wow, they hired a former Brady listed cop to run security?

(Full disclosure, I have an immediate family member who works for SPL, they have to deal with shit just like any public-facing worker, but the last thing they want is to have to act like cops on top of their normal duties.)

To me and my friends, it tasted like making a graveyard at the 7-11 Big Gulp fountain. We used to call the hotline for fun, but I can't remember what it said when you called.

I don’t think most of those guys are politically attuned, and a lot of them live fairly insulated lives. I’m sure β€œlower taxes for you, rich athlete man” is salient messaging.

Michael Robinson made an inside the locker room video series while on the Seahawks. In one episode (2012) he polled teammates on the presidential election. The only white guy he asked (Zach Miller I think) said he was voting Romney over taxes. I think you’re right.

I would love to see this. Would take a large rate increase to build it out. City Light is already trying to figure out how to pay for some major aging infrastructure replacements, and no one wants to hear it, but private telecoms have paid for a lot of small-scale infra replacements.

Why do the biathletes not simply shoot the other guys if they ski past

This is really the right way to frame it.

Pro-preservationists get really mad when you point out that this is how it works in practice.
