Average tax rates in the US in 2019 as a share of wealth. Tax declines from 30% for percentile 20 to 4% for the top wealth percentile.

Two points missing in recent Wealth Tax debates:
- If we measure total taxes as a % of wealth (not income), the system is highly regressive
- The wealthiest pay 3%-4% of their wealth annually in taxes. Wealth Tax shouldn't be seen as starting from zero (see US data from @gabrielzucman.bsky.social)

Labor income tends to lift individuals up the distribution โ€” through life-cycle and human capital dynamics โ€” while capital income, more volatile and concentrated, is often linked to downward shifts.

Key findings:โ€จ
๐Ÿ”น Measures of capital and labor mobility differ across metrics;โ€จ
๐Ÿ”น Upward mobility is mainly driven by labor income (and joint upward moves);
โ€จ๐Ÿ”น Downward mobility stems mostly from capital income (and joint downward moves).

We introduce a new framework that decomposes total income mobility into its labor and capital components across the life cycle โ€” covering nearly 300,000 individuals.

Pleased to see our new paper finally out!

Together with joรซl bรผhler and Roberto Iacono, we study income mobility dynamics in Norway using 26 years of high-quality register data.

Main result: upward mobility is primarily driven by labor income โ€” and almost never by capital alone. (1/4)

Great post by @brankomilan.bsky.social on Compositional vs. Income Ineq, highlighting @marcoranaldi.bsky.social's role in developing this novel concept. Regarding the high CI in the Nordics, @elisapalagi.bsky.social & I in our BEJEAP paper (doi.org/10.1515/beje...) have another interpretation..(1/n)

Just read @brankomilan.bsky.social's latest on income & compositional inequality. One more point: if AI pushes up the capital share by replacing jobs across skill levels, reducing compositional inequality can help capital complement laborโ€”and prevent income inequality from rising๐Ÿ‘‡
