Alright, quick update: they're using the method of characteristics. Basic idea is that with an equation of this form, you can find a set of lines along which the PDE reduces to an ODE. Equation 3 defines that transformation, and then in 7 they're setting out an approximation for the transformed eq

OK, I know enough about shallow-water waves to be able to give this a shot. Will get back to you once I've been able to give this a close read

Flick me a link. I'm a little rusty, but I think I've still got it, and it's an area of expertise for me

OK, fair. Unironically, though, there's a fair amount of stuff we could be doing that seems to be a good idea in a fairly clear-cut way that we just... aren't.

A big fracture line in our modern societies is between people who have a sense of themselves relative to history, and those that live in a timeless Now.

Ooh, I have a contribution! What if we were to stop constantly fighting each other about the best things to do, gain what power we can and actually *try some things*, then do more of the things that work and less of the ones that don't. I think that could be pretty rad.

... oh no. Don't make me feel sympathy towards Human Pet Guy

It's been striking to me, I'll admit. As much as a fair amount of my life sucks, I'm immeasurably richer than Luxon because I have friends, I've done some useful and interesting things in my life, and I don't need to be Prime Minister of New Zealand for people to think I'm clever

Oh Gods. What on earth does he watch? I can't imagine his tastes are very discriminating.

Also, I feel like this *should* make him seem more human, but somehow it makes him seem even weirder.

It occurs to me that this would be a great opportunity for tactical incompetence. If one were to do everything in client-side JavaScript that could be easily deactivated and that was in fact broken or otherwise trivial to circumvent...

Have you any idea how little that narrows it down?

Question for New Zealand political types: has anyone seen Chris Luxon do human stuff out and about at any point? Key got in trouble for pulling a barista's hair at a cafe, but I'm unsure as to whether Luxon is normal enough to go to a cafe in the first place.

23.11.2025 02:36 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, that's the thing: I think we've lost the margin of less idiotic people who are still stupid enough to go along with all of this. Which seems, uh, dangerous

23.11.2025 02:26 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Right, but sooner or later, reality reasserts itself, hard. The people in power simply can't afford to keep acting like idiots indefinitely

23.11.2025 02:19 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Like, how do the idiots with more money than God prevent competition that can crush them from emerging?

I unfortunately don't think you're wrong, but how does the increased power concentration work when people are just... like, practically, the first people to start taking statecraft and strategy seriously again are going to have a massive advantage over the people who are fundamentally unserious.

23.11.2025 02:16 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm lost as to why they're doing this when they're already unbelievably unpopular and when even New Zealand bigots aren't motivated to show up and vote by transphobia alone. It's barely even a vote winner in the US: this just seems stupid.

... which means that it might work, knowing this country.

More left-leaning people need to think about national security.

Regardless of what you think about governments or militaries, you have to have them.

Because of this, the people who run them should agree with you on where violence should be used.

Is it Russian troops or Venezuelan fishermen?

Ah, fuck, the creator of Flask's gone racist. Looks like it's time to learn a new framework.

(For all that Nuxt has its technical issues, I am very grateful that the team seems to be on the side of good, and perplexingly that's a more important technical factor than one might think)

The UK is perhaps good, at least inasmuch as they let me maintain hope in the USA and the American dream by comparison.

I note, of course, that there is rather a big difference between bombing Iraq and bombing Serbia. And that's to say nothing of Ukraine, who need every weapon that we can ship them yesterday.

New Zealand punches above its weight for constantly claiming it punches above its weight when it really doesn't
