The underside has more removable panels whose edges can collect dirt. Also, the high pressure drives dirt into those panels so then you get to do realistic panel shading. On the upper wings, really only the gun access panels collect dirt on their edges.

Oh, the cowling on that first pic is pristine because that plane had a replacement top cowling off a Spit with the opposite camo scheme.

If it were me, I’d add the decals, flat varnish it and then do “distressing” on the paint. I use very thin tan wash and a streak flat brush and do vertical streaking on the fuse and horizontal on the wings and I use an airbrush random texture mask to add fade spots and more distressing. Most of the weathering on the bottom of a Spit is from the copious amounts of oil they leak and the dirt and mud kicked up from the tires.

The reason you can’t have gun spot on top of the wing is the massive low pressure area that creates lift. It pulls all the gun spot off the wing. Conversely, it gets forced into the bottom of the wing by the high pressure that also creates lift. Basic aerodynamics that most modelers ignore.

What you primarily have is faded and chipped paint that is dirty (dirt, not smoke) and bleached by the sun. It alternates with oil stained close to, and on the fuselage and dirty footprints and handprints. Modelers tend to copy modelers, not real planes.

You can weather the roundels after but, yeah, you should weather the final painted plane with the decals. On real planes, there are no visible panel lines unless there’s a removable panel or door. No flush mounted plate ever gets dark shading. Also, no plane gets gun soot streaks on top of the wing.
