Coast Live Oaks are extremely special and one of my favorite trees. Over 600 documented species rely on them, though there are likely many more. They are only found in California and Baja California and only up to 60 miles from the coastline.

Black and white dead coast live oak with lots of tiny branches going in all directions.

When an oak tree burns, it attempts to create new branches in any direction on any living part of the tree in a desperate attempt to recover. This Coast Live Oak was in the 2017 Tubbs fires and ultimately died. Coast Live Oaks are incredibly resilient and many of the surrounding trees did survive.

Inside a burnt, hollow coastal redwood tree. This tree was massive, hundreds of feet tall, and still alive even though it was completely hollowed by fire. Amazing.

What an incredibly important person in so many ways. An inspiration in my life and countless others, and a champion for those who can't speak for themselves. As I am in the middle of my California Naturalist program, my admiration for her grows deeper. I'll do my best to honor her.

Yes, we are the party of tolerance BUT the we do not tolerate intolerance. Kirk intolerant of women, people of color, Trans people, anybody who wasn't a white man. We're allowed to not like men like this. It does not mean we're happy he was killed, but we are not grieving an intolerant hateful man.

So the right is claiming that leftists are "celebrating" Kirk's death. That the "party of tolerance" is revealing how awful they truly are. Let me explain something. Not being sad about a death is NOT the same as celebrating it. That's not what we are doing at all.

They said as long as he tones down the anti-MAGA rhetoric. I sincerely hope he sees that he has the power right now and does not tone down anything at all. In fact make it worse. Please.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

Absolutely. Widely considered one of television's best shows by audiences. So weird.

I'm hoping this will be a stepping stone into some conservation work. I also plan to combine it with nature photography lessons with teens as a way to creatively battle apathy around the subject of climate change for our future generations. Big things to come, I'm stoked.
