After a fantastic @eui-eco.bsky.social alumni conference, I played fancy dress with my students one last time. These people are bound to do great things, and it has been an immense privilege to teach them these past years. Thank you for the opportunity (particularly Russel) and best of luck!

Results? Less than 5h of work total: picking a questions from their tutorials, prepping, cleaning and adapting my marking scheme, running he seminar and setting up Moodle. Participation was very high (2/3 completed all the tasks) and by their own account, they learned a few things! [4/5]

How? Essentially, teach them to grade essays - build a marking guide, teach them to use it in an interactive (thanks Mentimeter!) online seminar, where we mark 3 example answers, and then ask them to mark each other's work using @moodlehq.bsky.social workshop module.

Why? Writing economics essays is different from other subjects + they come from high school with different expectations and levels. With large numbers, it becomes unfeasible to run seminars or give them all feedback before the final exam. [2/5]

I'm very happy to be nominated for the Innovation in Learning & Teaching Award 2025 @uniofbath.bsky.social
How? The Write Club - an interactive online workshop to teach 1st year undergrad students how to write an essay in economics, for large classes and limited teaching time [1/5]

Comic displays the Diamond Mortensen Pissarides model two key equations: the job creation curve and the wage determination curve
#econsky may I introduce you to the basic DMP model graphic explainer for undergrads. Explains the intuition so we can talk about equilibrium wage and tightness without going into value functions. Matching function is a bar, unemployed get free drinks (b) firms pay for entry.

📈📉 On the first lecture of the year, I like to ask my undergraduate students, first-year economics majors, what they think economists do. These are the results for this year's cohort:

how markov chains work ✅ I'll miss them all, they are a great cohort, and not just because they put memes in the problem sets...

Durham castle and cathedral in the sunshine from the river
I was awesome to attend the @coreecon.bsky.social workshop and meet some fellow instructors! Loads of new ideas and inspiration for the semester ahead. I forgot to take a picture of the workshop itself on the hurry to catch the plane, so please accept this sunny Durham instead
