Free piece just released. Marco Rubio called on tolerant, democratic, liberal Europe to destroy itself and embrace a Trump-like future. He received a standing ovation and we are told some people are reassured. If so, Europe will deserve everything coming its way. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

First step is to set priorities. I was invited to make a small contribution to this interesting perspective by Ignacio Saldivia Gonzatti of @w-u-r.bsky.social
Next step is actual implementation. Uncharted Waters is working on it.

Our latest monitoring data from Central Asia show a further decline in the region's mountain snowpack.
Working with TIIAME in Uzbekistan, we've been actively monitoring the situation since 2008. Smaller tributaries have lost over 50% of their minimum snow cover compared to two decades ago.

Together with China and Indonesia, India is the largest producer or rice. A lot of it is grown in the north-west of the country, irrigated with snow and glacier melt runoff from the Himalayas mixed with monsoon precipitation and groundwater.

The planet is changing fast. Data that can help us adapt is scattered. Collection and analysis is slow.
We are Uncharted Waters, a climate-tech start-up. We are on a mission to unlock real-time data on climate, water and food security, so people and organisations can act, not just react.
Follow us - Uncharted Waters.
At Uncharted Waters we harness the power of real-time data to help organisations act and adapt in an increasingly volatile world - www.unchartedwaters.com/insights

Uncharted Waters' Food Security Index tracks food security worldwide, using a range of indicators and nowcast and forecast data on climate, water, conflict, food production and trade.
Why it matters. Reveals emerging crises hidden by lagging data, connect food security and inequality and trade dynamics, supports fast, better-informed action.
Our FSI is different. Near real-time, benchmarked. Independent, with global coverage (except for smaller territories, notably Gaza). Incorporates indicators on both food availability and access.
π New Q2 2025 Food Security Indicator release!
Mixed patterns globally - trade & production remain key drivers. Regional shifts in Central America, Sub-Saharan Africa & East Asia since Q1.

Can sub-Saharan Africa feed its growing cities? Using a computer model we estimated Africaβs urban foodsheds and regional excess or shortage of food production. We show that improved water management can boost self-sufficiency, reducing the need to convert more land by ~25%.
