If you, like me, are looking for an edifying distraction from the news, I recommend taking a scroll through the Geo Women+ starter pack: go.bsky.app/Ay1iTTe
I just learned about it (thanks @morganahcrowley.bsky.social!) and had a lovely scroll this morning to add more women to my feed ๐
I would love to be added too! So many good people to follow on the list โบ๏ธ

In our recently published paper in Nature cities, we demonstrate enhancements in #urban #heatstress due to browning (i.e. #vegetation loss) in the recent past (2003-2020) for #cities in the #GlobalSouth based on data-driven estimates of heat stress indices for over 2300 urban areas. [1/n]

Based on these findings we make a couple of policy recommendations: 1) work to close the gap between single-family and multi-family tree canopy cover, 2) factor connectivity into municipal tree policy, & 3) take a context-specific approach to increase tree cover in industrial areas. ๐งต 7/8
06.12.2024 16:06 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0While I'm on this topic, I'll also add that through NIMBY-ism, exclusionary zoning practices, etc. multi-family residential areas are also more likely to be located next to industrial land uses (and associated pollution). ๐งต 6/8
06.12.2024 16:06 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Screenshot of Table 3 from the article. Table shows the area of tree canopy coverage by land use in the 10 cities.
Another notable finding: multi-family areas had an average of 8.5% pts less tree canopy than single-family with gaps as large as 18.6% (ahem Houston). I say "notable" because renter households with low income, who are disproportionately POC, are most likely to live in multi-family buildings. ๐งต 5/8
06.12.2024 16:05 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Screenshot of Figure 2 from the article. Figure displays the distribution of small (>1ha) and large (>12ha) patches of connected tree canopy by land use.
We find that single-family residential areas typically supply more of the small patches (>1ha) of connected tree canopy that provide localized cooling, while parks are home to the large patches (>12ha) that provide habitat to support urban biodiversity. ๐งต 4/8
06.12.2024 16:04 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0But what types of tree canopy are parks & residential areas providing? Is it the large patches that contribute most to nature based solutions? We dig into this by looking at patch size across the land uses. ๐งต 3/8
06.12.2024 16:03 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Screenshot of figure 1 of the article. The figure is 10 maps showing the distribution of tree canopy (by patch size) for Chicago, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Saint Louis, and Seattle.
We looked at tree canopy area and connectivity in 10 U.S. cities and found thatโdespite different climates, tree policies, and development patterns in these citiesโthe land uses with the greatest tree coverage were parks & single family residential areas (industrial land uses had the least). ๐งต 2/8
06.12.2024 16:02 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Screenshot of the first page of the Urban Forestry & Urban Greening article "Bridging the land use gap: Examining tree canopy cover and connectivity by land use in 10 U.S. cities".
Lots of research shows that #trees aren't distributed equally across #urban landscapes, but what are the drivers of tree inequality? In our #newarticle, we look at how *land use* mediates the distribution of trees.
