I think that's because SAG-AFTRA contracts have annual rate increases and clients aren't always increasing their budgets for the studios. And/or studios are constantly in bidding wars with each other to win those clients, so they cut costs everywhere they can.

The wild thing about this to me is that the concept of an "AI translator" isn't new, it's just that "AI" buzzword that sounds appealing to penny pinching executives. Google Translate has existed for almost 20 years. But you don't use it in lieu of humans who can interpret context.

They give writers less money and less time. Good writers end up pricing themselves out of work entirely or phoning it in just to meet deadlines and taking on too many jobs at once. It's a snake eating its own tail

The script is the most important ingredient, and it's not close. I've been watching this industry try to cut costs there for years and it is showing. If you're not noticing the difference, it's because someone cares enough about quality to push for us to fix it in the booth, when it costs much more.

Worked on a few things a while back and they all had the "translated by machine learning" script in common.
Not even the clients could provide context without a ton of back and forth. The scripts were a mess of contradictions and many times went against things established in prior installments.

I know people taking development jobs for IP's where both the execs that are paying for it AND the creative that is developing it are both openly like "this isn't going to happen, no one will buy this" but because it's IP (no matter how obscure), they're developing it.
