It was terrific to join the really creative AI+HI (Artificial Intelligence+Human Ingenuity) podcast with my Brookings colleague, Molly Kinder

Amapiano originated in the townships of Johannesburg. For those who want a video intro, Tyla’s “Shake Ya” will do the trick

12.01.2025 16:08 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It’s a unique blend of deep house, jazz, kwaito (itself a gumbo of styles & sounds), lounge & more. Yes, great to dance to, but the harmonies, syncopated beats, trance-like vibe all make it amazing in the background

10.01.2025 21:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Some cities & counties are pioneering a new approach, using “equity impact assessments” BEFORE land use & real estate development decisions happen. Sort of like the use of environmental impact statements to gauge likely effects & make better decisions re: whether & how to develop land.
10.01.2025 21:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0And the past decade has brought the issue of unaffordable housing costs & “displacement” to the foreground. Along fault lines of class, race & ethnic background especially & often pitting owners & investors against renters. Many leaders have tried to address this.
10.01.2025 21:13 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Even wonkier backdrop: conflicts & debates over land are among the oldest & most persistent, in America & around the world. And a huge part of inequality & how it grows and “reproduces” (in the shorthand of social science) over years & generations. Piketty has highlighted this, taking the long view
10.01.2025 21:13 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Spoiler alert: this is super wonky. It’s about how to (actually) develop our cities & their neighborhoods in ways that keep them much more affordable to live in, ie for the 99% of folks who aren’t affluent.
