anyway. i definitely would have come unglued if i’d stayed there another year. i would have lost my marbles. or gotten strangled to death by darth vader

it’s long enough ago to laugh. but i do kind of imagine it like i was working at the death star. my boss had any number of weird rules and unexplained grudges against other departments, like there was this ongoing feud with the deli that i didn’t understand.

i think the idea was to get paid and leave the country. anyway, yeah, i could have told him that wasn’t going to work.

in the winter the parking lot became an ice skating rink. id watch cars lose traction and nearly crash into the pumps. good times

it was a weird period of my life. it was usually a lot more boring than that. a coworker got fired for being just ludicrously high at work. dumb stuff like that. another coworker was from some country, i don’t even remember where, but he got caught clocking in on days when he wasn’t working

this guy definitely expected me to be on his side (probably our common skin color had something to do with it) but instead i talked him down from “we have to nail this guy who has done wrong” to “maybe it’s best if we don’t get police involved, considering who actually showed the most aggression?”

my role in this was to tolerate this guy who’d been made so uncomfortable by a social interaction that he’d pulled his gun on a stranger, and he demanded i make a security report and i just asked clarifying questions like “so he didn’t actually threaten you before you pulled the gun?”

i’m levelheaded in a crisis, and i know this because i worked in a gas station.
