Incredible how every NIMBY in Connecticut is also an expert in wetlands!

Also incredible how it works. Their homes with steams in the backyard? They’re stewards of the wetlands. Apartments? No matter where, they’ll destroy it.

Silas Deane Highway (Route 99) SS4A Corridor Study .

Have you ever used the Silas Deane Highway in Rocky Hill or Wethersfield???

Do you think it sucks and could be a much better, safer road with a dynamic walkable community along it?

Post image One topic that was not covered at all in this report is freight elevators.
Deindustrialization has been a major theme of American urbanism and politics throughout the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st, as vertical urban warehouses and factories gave way to sprawling, single-story facilities in the suburbs and exurbs. Reindustrialization has been on the minds of many policymakers in America, with the energy transition, supply chain security, and growing demand for logistics facilities driving increased interest in industrial real estate. Freight elevators were in heavy use in multistory industrial buildings in U.S. cities in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and are still common in East Asia and, to a lesser degree, Europe. And possible reindustrialization of North America's urban cores will have to involve freight elevators
- modern multistory warehouses in U.S. cities are built with truck ramps, but the amount of land needed limits their development. There may also be smaller-scale freight applications that could smooth out the bumps of urban logistics. One person with experience developing grocery stores in Germany, for example, said that freight elevators are often installed in urban format stores there. They are rarely seen in New York City, on the other hand, which has problems with breaks in the cold chain when perishable food needs to be hauled by hand into basement storage. Freight elevators likely see the same cost premium in North America as passenger elevators, and their cost could impede broader efforts to bring denser industry back to North American cities.
More research is needed to confirm this, and to identify any issues that are separate from those of passenger elevators.

Elevators are important for urban logistics, since cities don’t have big single-story spaces. Here are two freight elevators in the Astor Pl. Wegman’s (built by Wanamaker’s?). Common in European/Asian warehouses, rarer in the U.S. due to our extreme costs. admin.centerforbuilding.org/wp-content/u...

took a lot of essential services to the suburbs. Try finding a pediatrician within city limits, or buying clothes and shoes and school supplies for a child anywhere except the one Wal Mart on the south side of town (unless you rely on the limited selection of a handful of dollar stores).

It's tiring to see New York so often held up as a model of urban planning that can be meaningful for most American cities, or whose problems are harbingers of what's to come for other cities. New York is extremely unusual among American cities! Talk to me about Rochester and El Paso and Pontiac.

This is so real. I handle cases in Hartford, where I live and where my office is, and in Bridgeport, 60 miles away, mostly without a car, because I can get from home to the train station in ten minutes and get to clients' houses all over both cities on my folding bike.

I've been on two calls today with fire safety professionals where the topic was the safety of single-stair buildings. On both calls, somebody was driving while on the call – one a firefighter, the other a fire protection engineer.

Vital City | The High Price of Fine Print Overly complex building codes are a big reason why housing construction costs so much.

β€œNew York’s Code (along with those of several other big cities) still has restrictive rules limiting the use of plastic PVC and PEX pipes in plumbing, which are easier to install than the metal pipes favored by plumbers’ unions.” www.vitalcitynyc.org/articles/the...

Unsurprisingly, the lower speeds people are traveling at have noticeably improved the soundscape

Some news: This winter Team Oonee is launching NYC's first Dutch-Style🚲 parking hub in Brooklyn's Sunset Park. The Hub will provide free parking for 100+ bikes/scooters, and will include safe charging, and appt based repairs + lite service. This will make history in several ways.

We worked with the developer and community group to incorporate, design and develop the facility in accordance with highest standards. Last month we formally signed a 10 year lease (!!) and will move into the space in the winter. The practical implications here are massive.

this is a different development proposed for state property. there was never housing on this property

the demolished apt complex is now owned by the city and the housing authority is currently going through implementing a comprehensive revitalization plan with local resident/leaders‼️
