So much of our infrastructure, planning, environmental, and road safety measures seem to be based around politicians' fear of slightly inconveniencing easily-angered motorists. Pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users are barely considered in their calculations.

The Covid enquiry's finding that Johnson's government was "toxic and chaotic" should prompt the question: what conditions must be in place for there to be good government, because the evidence before & since suggests it wasn't merely an individual failing? This question, though, won't be asked.

This government has not taken a single meaningful step to tackle the causes of the horrendous inefficiencies in the criminal justice system, instead rushing to dismantle trial by jury.
Legal professionals have offered numerous alternatives to address the backlog.
Ministers are not listening.

It wasn't "appalling journalism". It was people doing what they were paid to do. If you want journalists to serve the public interest they must be paid by the public and not by billionaire cranks.

"Do you think the plebs should get a jury trial" is such a thrilling line from Labour, truly great to see this

Question about the TMS coverage of the Ashes (this week!). For UK people will the full TMS ball-by-ball broadcasts be available to listen back? I'd love to listen throughout the UK day time.
I seem to remember the TMS shows for home tests get bumped from BBC Sounds shortly after play finishes :/

A lot of questions from this: why would the Tories deliberately vandalise the public realm? Why would the press cheer them on in doing so, and shower hate on those who opposed it? Why would the Tories then deliberately fuck the public finances, and why would everyone pretend they hadn’t done it?

Govt policy of 15 years consistently both "don't dare come here" and also "it's so expensive yet shit that we hope you leave and never return".
Wretched fskin island.

I know these seem like basic questions I'm sure they've already asked but...why? To ensure what? In case *what* happens, exactly? To protect people from...what? Based on *what* research?* To what end?
*I know the answer is 'because cruelty', thanks.

I notice this is not the only time where a bunch of students were entirely correct about some idiotic, disastrous shit that British governments and the British press unified to forcefully impose upon the people of this country, and yet many of the fuckheads who were wrong are still in their jobs.

At some point, for the love of God, will someone ANYONE at long last take the council funding crisis seriously?!?
Because THIS is what will break down a society, not some poor soul escaping incredible dangers, arriving on our shores.

I think it’s erroneous to call Labour’s strategy ‘appeasement’. Labour is dominated by its right-wing, reactionary centrists who share the far-right’s analysis and solutions, subtended by a drive to eliminate the left and a belief in their electoral inevitability. It’s affinity and arrogance.

That sounds awesome! I need to get out more.
As I get older and 90s britpop/indie fades into the distance, the Manics have slowly risen to be one of my all-time faves, overtaking many that I was way more obsessed with at the time. Genuinely awesome band. They sound almost timeless these days.

Sorry kids, Greens’ fantasy politics don’t add up
Now Zack Polanski’s party is polling level with Labour it’s time to subject his platform to the scrutiny given to the grown-ups
The important thing to remember about smug patronising headlines like this is that they aren't aimed at the "kids" they're theoretically addressing. They're aimed at their parents. www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

I think the Labour Party has definitively answered the question of whether or not it's possible to build a successful political project out of a coalition of overlapping Israel, private water and healthcare, anti trans, gambling and big tech lobbies alone without any positive vision for the country.

How Palantir infiltrated the state
At a moment of national emergency, the government handed our data to Peter Thiel’s controversial company
In an interview about Palantir's creeping involvement in the British state and the NHS, I told @prospectmagazine.co.uk: “Its business is death and destruction. This is not an organisation you want running the democratic jewel of the postwar period.”

Shots of the T-1000 in the molten steel
The Thatcherite consensus went kaboom in 2008 and our political/media class will never admit it or permit backsliding, so it has just been the T-1000 thrashing in the molten steel *for 17 years*, trying to find a form that won’t get melted. Unfortunately, there isn’t one. Thus, permanent bullshit.

This man won one of the largest majorities in UK electoral history, is a white guy who was a prosecutor and prior to the election was beloved by basically all sections of the press. The fact he's been unable to use any of this to achieve anything is incredible.

Just absolutely classic BBC. You've just broadcast the most successful programme of the year, uniting Gen Z kids online and Boomers on broadcast in a return to appointment television. And instead of celebrating, your DG reigns due to a made-up right-wing scandal.

No more noble British tradition than resigning over some nonsense everyone is only pretending to be angry about rather than all of the actually bad things you've done.
