Last week, I was one of a small number of Sheffield librarians to deliver a morning of online info sharing presentations with our friends at National Technical University of Ukraine. Since which, staff there tell us their immediate vicinity's been subject to constant, heavy shelling. Heartbreaking.

Increasingly strikes me that not all 140-plus ratings are gained in roughly equally strong contests. I'd like to see at least a bit of research into how many 10yos and older in the present-day National fields owe their marks to their exploits against exposed sorts in veterans-only company.

It's nine years since the 13yo Vics Canvas finished third, and was unlucky not to claim at least a close second following one inopportune error. Has the race changed that much since to prevent a repeat? That was, admittedly, a year in which 140s-rated animals locked out the podium.

Re: government. I am less worried about racing surviving under Labour than many, as I don't for one minute believe Sir Keir would wish to risk losing Denise Coates's annual payment. I'd rest easier were his enthusiasm for jumps at least as conspicuous as that for the Flat, mind.

I feel your pain, Kate. Since the start of 2024 we've lost all of my wife's remaining family, my aunt, three colleagues across two of my workplaces and a number of elderly pets. It's all been too much in too quick succession at times.

Honourable mention for Woman's Gotta Have It by Cornershop, released in October of that year.

Hand on heart, I've returned to that one more times than any of those albums listed above. It was terrific played live also, especially the two parts of Jullandar Shere.
