I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.

The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.

Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

Yet another dose of reality from @danneidle.bsky.social for the β€œeasy answers raise taxes” brigade…

My favourite British TV SF. It’s only competitors globally I think are B5 and the Expanse.

Indeed - Vila is the only character to appear in all 52 episodes…

I’m struggling to see what is advantageous for the EU in bastardising its own single market and Schengen system simply for a bunch of outsiders jumping up and down shouting β€œit’s not fair! I want to spend more time in my villa!” 2/2

Up to a point - clearly the club is prepared to do deals with non-members. But these are negotiated presumably on the basis of it being mutually advantageous and getting the best deal for the club. Starmer’s negotiations with his red lines still had to OFFER things to the EU. 1/2

I dunno: people with charisma have this ability to distort reality to their will, and Farage distorts reality so much he is by some distance the most effective politician of his era.

I never cease to be amazed - it’s a club. There are rules for the people in the club, and visiting rules for people outside the club. Without those rules there is no club. We chose to leave the club. Seems frankly *weird* to moan that outsiders’ rules now apply? Am I missing something?

Also, control the price of bread so no loaf costs more than 5p. This will hugely incentivise people to bake more bread

It has truly great agricultural produce: but a lot of it will be in dour northern European categories like swedes and potatoes. The cheese and dairy is world class. There’s a lot of great meat. You’re just not going to get great tomatoes, olives, peppers, lemons.

And I suspect that Northumbria and East Anglia are specifically irrelevant because they were politically so thoroughly disrupted by Danes that they are as relevant as Roman political divisions. Hence Yorkshire…

Yes absolutely: but sort of so we’re the heptarchy kingdoms at one time or another. I just think we are probably too far from Mercia or Wessex for them to have any real meaning for people now. Essex, Kent, Sussex have a huge advantage in that, though defunct kingdoms, they have also continued.

Though, to illustrate your point, exhuming the names of defunct kingdoms (Powys, Ceredigion etc) DIDN’T work in Wales - they were too defunct.

Up to a point Lord Copper. You clearly don’t remember the utter hatred people had for the random 1974 counties. I think Rutland nearly staged a revolution. I DO think it helps for any polity, devolved or not, to have sense of β€œdemos”. People DO think they come from Yorkshire or Sussex or Cornwall
