playing fighters megamix for the sonic the fighters article, and it really strikes me how much of the visual flair of stf is lost for bean and bark here, losing the eye-tracking and more varied face / eye expressions takes a *lot* away!

also, yes, you can play as the girl, but you will get misgendered

in general i enjoyed a lot of the more creative attack effects, like punishing full benches. the game is also weirdly obsessed with retreat costs, with a lot of attacks doing more damage based on opponent retreat costs. There's even a Heavy Ball card to search for high retreat cost Pokemon?

also shout outs to perserker! my second deck was cats and dogs themed and this thing is deranged. for one energy you can do 10 and flip three times, each heads you draw a card. his second attack does 10 damage for every card in your hand (plus ten). it does have recoil damage, but its still absurd.

also very silly final boss! after playing a whole game where evolution is good and card filtering is very easy, you fight a deck that actively punishes you for drawing too many cards and evolving your pokemon.

the AI is not smart enough to not deck itself out with this card, so thats how i won.

That's kind of the sad part of these romhacks. They have a lot of cool ideas, but it's hard to really say how much their cards form a cool metagame or not because you only play against braindead bots. Still would recommend this if you want to play a slightly modern twist on the GBC game.

The main issue is just that the 90s GBC AI is pretty stupid, and becomes even stupider when you start giving it cards that have effects that weren't in the original game, like burn, discarding cards off the top of the deck, or attacks that do more damage if the opponent has more pokemon on the bench

Actually I just read the fine print on how that card works. Never mind! I'm just illiterate.

Anyway, it was cool. It was easy though. As seems to be always the case, that hardest duel was this one water club member with a Do the Wave deck.

I ended up playing on a modified version of the Chikorita and Friends deck for most of my run. Bayleef has the ability to search the deck for evolution cards WHILE doing damage for one energy, and it kind of meant getting Bayleef equaled winning, even if Meganium's attack only partially worked.

Does it succeed? Somewhat. I think a lot of the new card effects are cool, and the strength of the average Mon, especially evolved, is much higher with lower energy costs.

There are fewer damage sponge mons too, compared to the original game where multiple duelists hide behind scrunching Chanseys.

Rolled credits in Pokemon TCG Generations! It's I think the fourth romhack of Pokemon TCG for GBC that I've played through, and one of the more ambitious ones in terms of gameplay.

It introduces a lot of new card effects, changes trainer card properties and attempts to make evolution stronger.
