Yesterday I concluded my third play of the Blighted Reach campaign from @leder.games . I leaned into the Pacifist role a little too hard, and although I dominated in power I couldn't convince my Caretaker buddy to go against the two C fates...

Today marks the start of one of the highlights of the year. 10-12 friends meeting up for a weekend full of gaming, and this is my contribution of games. This event is also the main source of inspiration for the game i'm currently designing. 🎲✂️ #boardgames

...which I'm kind of interested in returning to, and refine using all of the ideas that are in the current version of the game. But how do you manage the fun in exploring a new track with making actual progress on the track you're currently on?

🎲✂️ After the digital playtest in screentop, a friend commented on how far I had come since that initial pen-and-paper concept I showed some years ago. I had almost forgotten about it. Spiritually it's the same game idea, but that initial concept used a completely different action economy....

I'll try to get around reading the rules properly, on a desktop screen and then I'll get back! :)

I just skimmed the rules, but it looks like a game I'd enjoy! Nice work!

As expected there were balancing issues, loopholes and a few thematic inconsistencies but my main takeaways are: 1) They thought it was a neat idea, 2) They were genuinely interested in exploring it and 3) They were impressed by how far I had gotten. Summing up, that's all I need to keep going!

🎲✂️ This weekend I did the first playtest of my screentop prototype with some of my closest friends. The teach was a bit rough, and they also had to learn their ways around screentop, but overall it went well...

June in #boardgames. The usual mix of on-table and online plays. Pax Pamir still in top due to constant Arena play. New games: Compile, FotR trick taking game and Hansa Teutonica. Moonrakers always a hit.

The game is mostly card driven, and I've found a workflow that allows quick iterations on design across a deck of cards: data is in a Google drive sheet, and the design is in Figma. I'm using a plugin that repeats the design for each row in the sheet. Export PNG and import in screentop. Boom!

Since about a month back I'm on the @unpub.bsky.social mentorship program as a mentee. This has given me the push I needed to get started on my game idea and I'm now approaching something that can be taken to initial playtesting with a screentop.gg implementation.

I'm using Mac and don't run Windows so I've resorted to other tools. I've just started working with Figma and a plugin to sync fields in the design with Google sheets data and it works pretty well. Having it in the cloud also means I can work on it from any of my computers which is nice.

My friend (half) jokingly says there are two themes in boardgames - war and trains :) - does your evolution also leave previous steps behind? ;)

April #boardgames. Ark Nova and Pax Pamir in the top thanks to BGA, but otherwise mostly in-person plays. Super happy to have Moonrakers back on the table but Molly House was the highlight of the month!

Tonight was Molly House night, and the community survived with only the house of pentacles raided. We made up for it by throwing a yellow dress surprise ball!

"Root Tea" from the game Root comes to mind! It has plenty of things that appeal to me - a fox, a cozy tent/fireplace setting and Kyle Ferrin's awesome art :)

Returned to a classic in Race for the Galaxy. If you're easily distracted, this game is rough. Each card drawn is situationally really good. But at the same time it's also one credit towards paying for another card. So, do you keep it until you can play it, or use it as payment now...? #boardgames

We take one ballad at a time, and save the game state in between. I made a "save sheet" for both players where we record parish states, hidden / revealed merry men and carriages and any other private info, which is then put in an envelope. Then we can just pack the game away for the next session :)
