Huge thanks to John Coxhead @4130chromo.bsky.social and amazing team for organizing #GenomeScience25.
#Genomics at its best. Super-interesting and great fun.
Wendy Bickmore closing #GenomeScience25 with a fascinating update on the latest thinking about how enhancers work in the #genome.
Perfect end to a great meeting ๐

Now we have condensed updates from the tech companies.
Fabulous kick off talk at #GenomeScience25 from @matthewcobb.bsky.social discussing just a few of Francis Crickโs great conceptual leaps (and some less stellar moments) in the understanding of molecular biology and evolution as outlined in his new biography: get it on the Xmas list amzn.eu/d/fIPxARk
09.07.2025 13:49 โ ๐ 44 ๐ 6 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We also have to overcome risk-averse data governance challenges, and take a system-wide view of health economics to allow savings made by #genomics to be fed back to support its implementation.
But the potential benefits are massive. I support the vision and will try hard to help deliver it.
Not everything will deliver, and we need to reflect on priorities in an economically difficult climate. The #genomics itself is almost the easy part. To create the most clinical benefit, we will have to connect genomics with outcome data in national IT projects (to date, not our forte)

Quote from Dr Rich Scott, Chief Executive Officer from Genomics England, "The UK has long been a global leader in genomics. This continued support will strengthen our ability to harness the full potential of genomics and data-driven healthcare that will benefit the public for generations to come."
The governmentโs strong support for genomic healthcare in the 10 Year Health Plan is a vote of confidence in the power of genomics to transform lives. We are excited about the role we will play in bringing this to life.

At no point in this study did I use AI. This includes the literature review, logical organization, writing, analysis, and proofreading. I do not cite any studies that use AI, to the extent that it is possible to know.
Yesterday I used this "AI -Free Statement" in a conference talk for the first time. Still trying to figure out the exact language.

We are looking for talented researcher to work on a project to detect gene fusions and driver mutations in a large cohort of children with ALL treated across multiple different trials to determine their clinical relevance.
I'm not against preventative screening, if done appropriately, but all this money for preemptive WGS at a time when our budget for #genomic testing patients *who actually have a disease* is being cut by 10%?
Explain that to me someone.
