Congratulations!
Original, beautifully crafted films for the win!
So much doom and gloom in the film business tends to become a self-fulfilling prophecy, that it's always great to prove the naysayers wrong.

Georgia Fort, an independent journalist and vice president of the Minnesota NABJ chapter, was also arrested by federal agents this morning

I was sent this video of agents at her door:

I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows.

I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

Laura Jedeed on applying for a job with ICE: "I expected them to Google me, and they didn't ... they sent me a final job offer ... what's disturbing is we don't know who is wearing these masks with guns in our city. We don't know if they have domestic violence convictions."

Why is it that tech and AI boosters keep saying "you can't put the genie back in the bottle" when making arguments about AI's supposed inevitable dominance? Did they not read the story? The genie does, indeed, go back in the bottle. Maybe we should start there.

It’s not β€œlosing money” any more than air traffic controllers or public highways or street lights or fire departments are β€œlosing money.” It is a government service. It’s not SUPPOSED to make money. It’s supposed to reliably deliver to anywhere in the US, even the unprofitable places.

The Last Video Rental Store Is Your Public Library Audio-visual librarians are quietly amassing large physical media collections amid the IP disputes threatening select availability.

β€œAs prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”

I was an editor on this documentary about the incredible story behind the making of Coppola's Megalopolis. Even if you haven't seen the film (it's not currently available on streaming) this is some fascinating and nutty stuff about filmmaking and what can happen when dreams collide with reality.

TRYING TO HAVE IT ALL. Acrylic on Canvas 11"x14".
Usually I work from a detailed sketch and underpainting, but every once in awhile I just splatter paint on the canvas and wait for shapes and figures to reveal themselves. My version of surrealist automatism.

Photo of a page in Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut. My thumb is visible on the left. It says:

The founders were aristocrats, and they wished to show off their useless education, which consisted of the study of hocus-pocus from ancient times. They were bum poets as well.

But some of the nonsense was evil, since it concealed great crimes. For example, teachers of children in the
United States of America wrote this date on blackboards again and again, and asked the children to memorize it
with pride and joy:

1492

The teachers told the children that this was when their continent was discovered by human beings. Actually, millions of human beings were already living full and imaginative lives on the continent in 1492. That was simply the
year in which sea pirates began to cheat and rob and kill them.

Reading Kurt Vonnegut was one of the better decisions I made when I was seventeen
