A Realist’s Guide to Canada’s Digital Sovereignty: - Chamber of Progress
The Government of Canada released a new white paper defining digital sovereignty and outlining how the country can protect its data, systems, and IT
Canada’s new digital sovereignty paper cuts through the noise:
-True autonomy is impossible
-A homegrown tech stack won’t save us
-Define what’s critical. Encrypt it
Even “Canadian” clouds run on global code. The future is hybrid, secure, pragmatic.

Oh, and: the feds will create an Office of Digital Transformation to push “sovereign AI tools” in government. The new digital sovereignty paper feels pragmatic–so I expect room for global tech tools alongside homegrown ones. But more from me on this soon.

And, third, is the government's promise to formally rescind the Digital Services Tax (or DST), which is hinted at in the budget but not actually reflected in the Ways and Means Motion. The tax never really made sense, so will be checking the BIA to see how they follow through

Another is a series of investments in AI infrastructure. Will be watching to see how they can help support Canada's tech sector and global competitiveness, and complement existing private sector investment

The first is a promise to introduce legislation to regulate stablecoins. Will be following closely to see if policy-makers can strike the right balance between consumer safeguards and innovation.

Data sovereignty in light of the CLOUD Act: back to the future?
Ottawa and provincial governments across the country are facing demands for Canadians’ data to be protected — in part — from foreign access under a U.S. law known as the CLOUD Act.
Anxiety over the CLOUD Act is driving calls for sovereign cloud solutions across Canada. But a lot of the debate rests on misconceptions. This piece cuts through the noise and argues for a risk-based approach over crude geographic boundaries: www.osler.com/en/insights/...
