After the SNL parody of El Chavo, can we expose the US to other "gems" of Mexican culture via SNL? What about Cuna de Lobos? the Maldita Lisiada scene? A sketch about the Paco Stannley murder?

My dude, Claudia is culturally Jewish. AMLO is most likely a Protestant, or at least very sympathetic to Protestantism. MORENA is literally the heir to the old Revolutionary Nationalist movement which was against organized religion in public life. This is lazy analysis.

We are producing a generation unable and (somewhat) unwilling to think, read and write without relying on tech controlled by some of the most evil people on the planet to tell them what to think, read and write and they don’t seem to see the dangers of this dependency even if we point it out

Private Equity’s $3 Billion Bet on a Casino Chimera A casino is at the center of a fight over the soul of Coney Island, one of three downstate casino licenses being pursued in New York.

Private equity wants a $3 billion casino on Coney Island, but it's a gamble residents don’t want to take. The company is allegedly handing out cash and ice cream to those willing to support their project. From James Baratta: trib.al/WbZm1BZ

It's difficult for my writing not to sound repetitive in English given that useful Spanish words such as "resaltar," "recalcar," and "destacar" all have one translation: "highlight."

Good, nuanced take on yesterday’s events in @jacobinmag.bsky.social: “the prospect of a descent into tit-for-tat political violence is an ominous development that threatens to narrow the space for meaningful political action.”

Every once in a while the not-fascist sector of the british public gets REALLY REALLY MAD when non-brits make fun of their food, and make all the obvious jokes about how brexit was a reaction against having to eat food with flavor...but like...guys...is any of that really false

Does cycling infrastructure prioritize gentrifying neighborhoods? The case of Mexico City This paper aims to test the existence of a relationship between gentrification and the presence of cycling infrastructure in central Mexico City using a sample of 555 neighborhoods in central Mexic...

Not only that, but in some places, gentrification is very heavily state led. Local governments place nice amenities as a way to entice gentrifiers, and place these *only* in areas that are gentrified/gentrifying. In CDMX, bike infrastructure correlates heavily to Airbnbs and urban redevelopment.

I Didn't Win Zohran Mamdani’s Scavenger Hunt, But I Did Have A Nice Day Out In NYC - Aftermath Maybe the City doesn't suck and you don't have to be afraid of it

"As Republicans (and Democrats like... Andrew Cuomo) scare-monger the dangers of the city and its transit, there was definitely power in telling a different story through getting participants outside, encouraging them to interact with each other and use the city’s streets, busses, and trains."

I don't agree with all of Mamdani's policy ideas, but he has consistently (and forcefully) said all the right things about street safety, bike lanes, and walkability.

Myth of the big, bad megacity What the right feels about metropoles isn’t physical fear. It’s discomfort

This recent article is HUGELY relevant now.

“What the far right feels about cities isn’t physical fear. It’s discomfort. Canadian city planner @brenttoderian.bsky.social decodes this feeling as: “I’m not the majority anymore, it isn’t my city anymore.” @simonkuper.bsky.social in @financialtimes.com

I don’t know how you’d define wealthy, but what Cuomo is describing—preventing a large share of the population from taking new rents in stabilized apartments, which make up 44% of the rental stock—could make the problem of lack of rental turnover even worse, harnessing people to their homes.
