Legal Protection For Beavers - Afonydd Cymru Protection may have been confirmed but a new forum must ensure that reintroductions do not impact already threatened fish species..

Yr wythnos diwethaf, cyhoeddwyd y bydd dyfrgwn yng Nghymru yn derbyn amddiffyniad cyfreithiol.

Er bod hyn wedi cael ei groesawu, rhaid i Fforwm Dyfrgwn Cymru newydd sicrhau na chaiff unrhyw niwed ei achosi i rywogaethau pysgod sydd eisoes dan fygythiad wrth eu hailgyflwyno.

Legal Protection For Beavers - Afonydd Cymru Protection may have been confirmed but a new forum must ensure that reintroductions do not impact already threatened fish species..

Wales's Deputy First Minister announced last week that beavers in Wales would receive legal protection.

While this was welcomed, it is essential that a new Wales Beaver Forum ensures no harm is caused by reintroductions to already-threatened fish species.

Enw ein hafon mis Medi, yr Afon Wysg, yn awgrymu'r nifer o bysgod yr oedd yn eu cynnal unwaith.

Nid yw'n syndod efallai fod offeiriaid lleol wedi ceisio gwahardd pysgota ynddi ar ddydd Sul, gan fod glan yr afon mor ddeniadol.

Our September river of the month's Welsh name means "abounding in fish."

It is perhaps no surprise that the local clergy once tried to have fishing in it banned on Sundays, such was the lure of the riverbank.

Mae’n amser dechrau meddwl am y sychder nesaf.

Rydym yn gwybod bod ein tywydd yn dod yn fwy eithafol. Yn ei blog mis Medi, mae ein Prif Weithredwr, Gail Davies-Walsh, yn dadlau bod angen dechrau paratoi ar gyfer y sychder nesaf nawr – nid pan fydd yr anochel yn digwydd.

It's Time To Start Thinking About The Next Drought - Afonydd Cymru Actions needed to alleviate the next, inevitable drought need to happen now or they will be too late....

Autumn may have arrived but it’s time to start thinking about the next drought.

We know our weather is becoming more extreme. In her September blog, our CEO Gail Davies-Walsh argues that preparing for the next drought must begin now, not when the inevitable happens.

Just as concerning as these assessments is the lack of any urgent actions to resolve issues that are increasingly likely to lead to the extinction of these iconic fish species in Wales.

Sadly, the situation for sewin (sea trout) is no better.

Similar analysis of the 33 main sewin rivers in Wales has shown an equally dramatic decline with all bar one now classed as β€œat risk”. Sewin in Wales are believed to be highly vulnerable and at risk of ongoing further decline.

In England, 83% of the salmon populations in principal rivers are β€œat risk” although this is predicted to improve to 71% by 2029.

However, none of the Welsh β€œat risk” populations are predicted to move out of this category by 2029, showing just what a parlous state salmon are in.

The 2024 salmon stock assessments for Welsh and English rivers have been published today. Once again, they make for grim reading.

In Wales, the salmon populations in all our 22 β€œPrincipal Salmon Rivers” remain β€œat risk” of maintaining their future populations.

Water supply problems are not a new issue for the UK.

In the 1880s, a river in Wales was dammed to give Liverpool a desperately needed new supply. It sparked a scramble by other cities to secure their own Welsh water.

Our August river of the month: Afon Efyrnwy (Vyrnwy).

Very happy to be part of this project to reduce the amount of agricultural plastics in Welsh rivers.

Our thanks to West Wales Rivers Trust for providing the valuable groundwork for this initiative in a similar project they ran last year.

Rivers And The Sustainable Farming Scheme - Afonydd Cymru Will the new farming subsidy scheme deliver improvements for Wales's rivers?

It is widely acknowledged to be an improvement on previous incarnations, but is it likely to have any meaningful benefits for Welsh rivers?

Widespread Failure In Wales Marine Protected Areas - Afonydd Cymru A report has highlighted the extent and complexities of the issues facing marine sites....

Mae'r rheoleiddiwr yn gywir wrth ddweud bod y problemau yn eang ac yn gymhleth.

Ond un peth sy'n sicr: os ydym yn datrys y problemau sy'n effeithio ar SACau afon, byddwn yn datrys llawer o'r rheini sy'n effeithio ar safleoedd morol hefyd.

Mae'n siomedig dysgu bod, fel SACau afon, nifer o APMau Cymru yn methu.

The regulator is correct in saying that the issues are extensive and complex.

But one thing is for sure: if we resolve the problems affecting river SACs, we will resolve many of those affecting marine sites too.

This is a WEL statement next to a photo of a chaffinch (a beautiful small songbird, with rusty orange on its front, and black, white and grey feathers for its wings), beak open as though it's speaking the statement itself, although is probably just a lovely song. It's perched on an old fence post, against a fuzzy background of trees.

You can learn more about chaffinches and hear their song here: https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/chaffinch

The text of the statement itself says:

Wales Environment Link welcomes the Environment (Principles, Governance, and Biodiversity Targets) Bill and urges for stronger protections for nature

This Bill is a crucial chance for the Welsh Government to respond to findings in recent reports by the Senedd and Audit Wales, which highlighted that the nature emergency hasn’t been enough of a priority for Wales. They must catch up to England and Scotland and deliver action for the environment in Wales.

For this Bill to deliver its full potential, it must:

Clearly enshrine environmental principles and a duty of integration of environmental protection in law, recognising biodiversity as the foundation of a healthy, sustainable planet

Establish a genuinely independent governance body, with the authority and resources it needs to fulfil its remit

Introduce a robust and ambitious targets framework that drives immediate action for nature
