Wales's Deputy First Minister announced last week that beavers in Wales would receive legal protection.
While this was welcomed, it is essential that a new Wales Beaver Forum ensures no harm is caused by reintroductions to already-threatened fish species.

Our September river of the month's Welsh name means "abounding in fish."
It is perhaps no surprise that the local clergy once tried to have fishing in it banned on Sundays, such was the lure of the riverbank.

Just as concerning as these assessments is the lack of any urgent actions to resolve issues that are increasingly likely to lead to the extinction of these iconic fish species in Wales.

Sadly, the situation for sewin (sea trout) is no better.
Similar analysis of the 33 main sewin rivers in Wales has shown an equally dramatic decline with all bar one now classed as βat riskβ. Sewin in Wales are believed to be highly vulnerable and at risk of ongoing further decline.

In England, 83% of the salmon populations in principal rivers are βat riskβ although this is predicted to improve to 71% by 2029.
However, none of the Welsh βat riskβ populations are predicted to move out of this category by 2029, showing just what a parlous state salmon are in.

The 2024 salmon stock assessments for Welsh and English rivers have been published today. Once again, they make for grim reading.
In Wales, the salmon populations in all our 22 βPrincipal Salmon Riversβ remain βat riskβ of maintaining their future populations.

Water supply problems are not a new issue for the UK.
In the 1880s, a river in Wales was dammed to give Liverpool a desperately needed new supply. It sparked a scramble by other cities to secure their own Welsh water.

The regulator is correct in saying that the issues are extensive and complex.
But one thing is for sure: if we resolve the problems affecting river SACs, we will resolve many of those affecting marine sites too.

Natural Resources Wales have today published its assessment of the condition of Walesβs Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
It is disappointing to learn that like river SACs, many of Walesβs MPAs are failing.
With Senedd elections coming next Spring, the progress of this Bill will also be a good indicator of just how important the environment is to all of Wales's political parties.
