I'm telling them that it's not anti-american to want independence, because it isn't. Anti-american sentiment entails wanting the downfall of the US, economically, politically, or militarily, and independence just means a desire to separate, to choose your own path.

The founding fathers weren't altruistic, they were selfish, but in a way that benefited the majority of the colonies. They wanted to be free of the UK's hold as much as everyday citizens, and that intent and power aligning is what drives political shifts.

It had a ton of that, as all nations touched by Europe did. I'm saying that rot isn't what made America desire independence, or to go their own way. It was a rot that was carried over that the US couldn't cure, but PR can.

The US in the 1770's *was* the pinnacle of independent fervor at its time. Ideology and History are never in a vacuum, and if anything, the flaws of white supremacy and misogyny were the hallmarks of the rot that affects the US today, resulting in PR refining that spark of nation building.

Just say you have no GD clue what drove the foundation of America as an independent nation, and be done with it. Puerto Rico is literally adopting the soul of what founds a nation, out of the ashes of the corrupted empire it's tied to.
