Billionaires and Freedom: I have been pondering a quote by Peter Thiel for some time now; he said in 2009 that "I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.” And that phrase has been bothering me for so long. Modern democracy, while imperfect, enables and protects so many freedoms – the freedom of movement, freedom of commerce, freedom of choice, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to marry, freedom to organize. However, with the anti-democratic events that have transpired in the past year, and the Epstein files revealing the nefarious machinations of billionaires like and including Thiel, things have clicked and his quote finally made sense to me.

"Freedom" to billionaires means something entirely different than what “freedom” means to you, me, and the rest of the 99 percent. The wealth of a billionaire is so vast that it even warps their understanding of time and space. A billionaire CEO can consider a private plane commute between Los Angeles and Seattle normal, while the working class sit in traffic to get to work and struggle to get efficient public transit. “Freedom” for a billionaire is ultimately tied to the only thing that defines them – their money. Thiel and his class see freedom as the ability to more money they can spend in a thousand lifetimes and the ability to spend their money anyway they want without consequence.

A robust democracy would fetter the freedom of the billionaire class to do as they please with their ill-gotten wealth. Billionaires would not be free to buy politicians, elections, or vulnerable children. They would not be able to bribe officials to build useless tunnels and climate-destroying data centers. Billionaires would not be able to influence public opinion with phony think tanks, or pit the working class against each other and against our own best interests. They would just keep the freedoms that democracy already affords them.

The "freedom" of billionaires is antithetical to democracy and the freedoms of us, the 99 percent. This is because a robust democracy requires a shared commitment to society, to one another, to equity and justice. While that commitment is binding, continuing this social contract enables so many freedoms that we the people enjoy and take for granted. The billionaire class does not share this commitment. If they did, they would not have done any of the monstrous deeds that we have learned about this past decade. If they shared this commitment, they would not be billionaires in the first place.

Excuse my wall of text; I have been having a lot of thoughts about how extreme wealth distorts reality, and I wanted to write them down. I felt the text posts would be a better format than a long thread.
