There is a single person we can blame for the upheaval of the board game industry in America. I’d love to be more candid, but I’ll defer to my earned karma.

Realized just a short while ago that while at any other time I would snap-jump at a way to be at Gen Con this weekend, I currently have multiple projects going that would be impossible to give the proper attention to if I lost five of the next twelve days.

Easy to forget sometimes when I’m BUSY!

Ah, Gen Con. How I will miss you.

Just not necessarily the crowds and sensory overload.

But everything else? My friends, trying a few new games, the food trucks? I will miss that.

Maybe next year.

Chester the Jester. I think I had just turned 18 when I “rode shotgun” with him in his office as he explained how his design matrix worked — fascinating stuff for sure. He let me help theme some of Chester’s signature moves.

I also did the colors for the covers of his dinosaur series.

Al Leonardi gave me my first real break in the games business when he brought me on as an illustrator and junior designer on one of the Lost Worlds books thirty-odd years ago. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

On a personal note, I adore Duran for his accessibility with the fans. For me, as someone who’s spent decades managing depression, his openness about his own mental health struggles goes beyond raising awareness for an important and often misunderstood condition, it’s downright heroic.

Going into the second half (and the trade deadline), I truly hope the Red Sox keep Jarren Duran in Boston. To say he’s the de facto heart of this team, an unmistakeable goodwill ambassador, and an irreplaceable fan favorite is an understatement. And that’s without noting he’s just a great player.

Add in that Pat Marino and Jim DiCamillo both went to school here too, and RIT has a pretty solid history for turning out tabletop game designers.

Visiting my old college campus, RIT, and found myself in the basement of the Student Alumni Union. This is the home of the Tech Crew offices, where Exploding Kittens creator Elan Lee and I used to work together over 25 years ago.
