I don’t really disagree, but just know from experience that it isn’t universally conceived of or applied that way.

Yeah, I totally understand about that - I think it’s all part of the sort of “hidden curriculum” that those of us who don’t have academics in the family often discover only through often embarrassing mistakes. And agree titles should have meaning, sadly I just think they aren’t applied consistently.

And many schools have “Professors of the practice” who do not have doctorates, and sometimes not even MAs but rather extensive experience in the given field. This came up years ago on Twitter as well and I think the conclusion was that these terms are not as rigidly defined as is often thought.

But then what of adjunct professors? I have twice been an adjunct professor, first of Italian at UNH and then of Ancient and Medieval history at Plymouth State University and I only have an MA. But both times my hiring papers said “Adjunct Professor.”

All historians, regardless of gender, do “gender stuff,” all the time. It’s just a question of do they work using lenses that are inclusive or exclusive. Many (most?) men have unknowingly been doing “gender stuff” their whole career by reading and writing everything’s through an exclusionary lens.

I personally don’t think Pliny is asking forgiveness instead of permission here (though it would not be completely out of character) but rather is legitimately befuddled by the Byzantine ( 😉) rules regarding Egypt specifically since it functioned so differently from every other province
