Other folks have mentioned it too - but i find if I flick the joystick I’ll face the direction I want but I won’t also move in that direction (or I’ll move very little). Tilting to almost top down is also super helpful.

You could also potentially make the end pieces with attached short rectangular sections (like 1-2in) and then have however many middle rectangles you need for the respective size.

That way you don’t have to fiddle with sewing the hook and loop onto the curve.
