The only good tech advancement that we've gotten out of Silicon Valley in the last 20 years or so is the quality of laptop sound. My current MacBook Air is way better than the tinny speakers on my old Compaq Evo that would blow out on the Windows XP startup sound.

I've always considered myself a crank for doing my taxes with Excel 2000 in a WinXP VM (because TurboTax can eat my entire ass) but re-learning LaTeX to avoid modern Word is next-level. Much respect.

I've been using Linux for funzies on old laptops for 20+ years and I'm impressed that Linux gaming "just works" now (though I shouldn't be, since Valve spent tons of cash on Proton). It's a very different experience from compiling kernel modules and hand-editing XF86Confg to play Quake or whatever.

It might have been something about y'all drinking from the garden hose or something.
