It breaks my heart to hear this.

This is an open offer to any author reading this if we can help to promote your book let me know.

Everything we do is free of charge.

That's great to hear! Yeah I think for me, in the normal pace of life, it's easy to forget how much work it is to read/research/find markets and figure out what to send them during their reading periods, and then just be ready to send something out again after a rejection.

TBH I have not been very organzied about short fiction submissions, I have seemed to do them in waves over the years (some years not submitting any at all). I'm trying to see whether keeping up on it results in more acceptances and/or keeps me writing new stories.

I take it as a win every time I find a niche or new-to-me market and figure out what I can send to them, and then do it.

I regret to inform myself that having many more stories under consideration does not make endlessly refreshing Submissions Grinder more satisfying or less suspenseful, but it's like logging fitness goals, which is a better way to look at it IMHO.

Also working on writing more stories in stages, ie. developing them more before writing the first draft and having multiple WIPs on the go. Usually I go all-in on one story at a time.

My goal of sending out as many submissions as reasonably possible this year is off to a good start: 18 subs this month. (I usually seem to send out 40-ish submissions a year).

I would not be the writer I am without the support of Little Ghost books. They are a hub for the Toronto horror community and beyond. They've been there for everyone with free programming, community events, and supporting indie authors. I sincerely love them, toss the ghosts some coins if you can.

I definitely do! I don't think I ever write short stories while working on a novel, I tend to do that between drafts/MSs

If these haven't already been mentioned (I may have missed them in the replies), The Earth: A Biography of Life by Elsa Panciroli, and Vanished Giants: The Lost World of the Ice Age by Anthony J. Stuart. (Though I wonder if the latter I didn't hear about from you on social media at some point...!)

A photo collage showing various new colorful enamel pin designs designed by me: a peacock mantis shrimp, a group of garden eels, a black and white isopod, a curled up rubber ducky isopod, and an anomalocaris. They are all posed inside a purple crystal.

History, one of the humanities, can tell you how much both those disciplines have changed despite past adherents of each being sure they were right about things.

Minnesota Proved MAGA Wrong The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions.

Stop what youโ€™re doing and read this piece, which is as powerful as youโ€™d expect from @adamserwer.bsky.social witnessing the events of last week on the ground in Minnesota. โ€œThe secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that theyโ€™re the ones who are alone.โ€

Some people are able to take that as advice that could help, but a certain mentality will always see it as an insult.

I saw it once as a kid, and then decades later as an adult, and that was surreal -- I didn't remember so much of it, but the VIBE of that movie had stayed with me
