08.11.2025 15:35 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0A hazy sun in a vrilliant blue sky over Whaley Bridge canal basin. There's steam rising from a narrow boat blending into a misty horizon beyond the boathouse. Trees on the bank still hold a few golden leaves amid almost bare branches. The canal basin reflects the sky, trees, and three narrow boats. There's an empty bench where you could sit awhile and gaze.

20km from Whaley Bridge to ShiningTor and back via The Swan Inn at Kettleshulme.
08.09.2025 21:52 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0A gargantuan timber structure, resembling a stockade, towers just beyond an open-weave chain link fence. The edifice looms oppressively over a small neat informal garden patio in the foreground, which has on it a round wooden table with pots of flowers at its centre, and a pair of matching chairs. The patio is dwarfed by the building and lies in its shadow. Small coloured lightbulbs hang in a row along the bannisters of a flight of steps which lead to a lawned area, accommodating a large tree, beyond the patio. The sky above is cloudy and grey. The dark underside of the structure yawns like a cave to the side of the patio, with the void extending high above the ground, creating an ominous space in contrast to the welcoming nature of the seating area. The overall impression is of a country cottage garden set below a pier or prison watchtower.
PLANNING APPLICATION - WHALEY BRIDGE
Public comments are still being invited on a retrospective application seeking consent for a 25ft long raised garden platform, already built, on 6ft high posts in a residential area. Comments on application HPK/2025/0212 can be made here: tinyurl.com/79m7mts8

It is indeed Whaley Bridge canal basin, with the Transhipment Warehouse at its head. The restored canal basin is now a thriving location; hosting markets and community events and festivals. The Transhipment, which includes a pre-loved bookshop, is open 6 days a week.
Come down and check it out!
