A gargantuan timber structure, resembling a stockade, towers just beyond an open-weave chain link fence.
The edifice looms oppressively over a small neat informal garden patio in the foreground, which has on it a round wooden table with pots of flowers at its centre, and a pair of matching chairs.
The patio is dwarfed by the building and lies in its shadow.
Small coloured lightbulbs hang in a row along the bannisters of a flight of steps which lead to a lawned area, accommodating a large tree, beyond the patio.
The sky above is cloudy and grey. The dark underside of the structure yawns like a cave to the side of the patio, with the void extending high above the ground, creating an ominous space in contrast to the welcoming nature of the seating area.
The overall impression is of a country cottage garden set below a pier or prison watchtower.

Whaley Lane is currently closed to motorists.
We're told that this is due to a burst water main on Disley Tops (Buxton Old Road), with unconfirmed reports coming in of damage to the road surface.

It is indeed Whaley Bridge canal basin, with the Transhipment Warehouse at its head. The restored canal basin is now a thriving location; hosting markets and community events and festivals. The Transhipment, which includes a pre-loved bookshop, is open 6 days a week.
Come down and check it out!

Air quality remains poor in Whaley Bridge due to the ongoing moorland fire near Errwood reservoir.
The Cat and Fiddle Road, where firefighters have been tackling the substantial blaze since yesterday morning, is open, but drivers are advised to use the route with care as crews are operating there.
