You know the Turbo III wasn’t set for prime time when Warren Mosler turned it down, saying it wasn’t really ready for production. Something has gone terribly wrong when you’ve lost the guy whose cars look like an overturned rowboat.

Spirit R/T ownership (twice!) is what my therapist would later help me see was a latent need to have any pleasureful experiences tempered by shame and punishment.

Had I not been raised Pentecostal, I’d probably have just bought a Prelude and never once worried about timing belts or AC compressors.

Introduce yourself with the first 5 cars you've owned

So, ours was 5.5’ from the hatch to the front passenger seat back with it pushed all the way forward. If it’s just you, you could absolutely fit the tree in the interior with enough persistence, and maybe a plastic bag. It’s definitely not more than 18” from the seatback to the windshield.

It’s a Smeg FAB5 little fridge. It’s supposed to be a European countertop fridge but it’s on a little stand there.

They were wearing slim-fit puffer coats and some ugly Allbirds-style shoes and buying their Thanksgiving dinner pre-made at Whole Foods.

Stereotypes exist for a reason, I guess.

Thanks. I spent so many months sweating over how pieces would fit together, that as it came together in the last two days, it’s kind of surreal.

The sheer volume of Fisker Oceans we see here is proof that Seattle, for all its pluses, is still populated by tech-adjacent bobbleheads who are desperate to be seen in something novel as proof that they were into *thing* before it was cool.

I mean, Final Fantasy II for SNES was $65 when I saved up what few ducats I could scrape together for it in 1991, and for that we got a protagonist named "Cecil."

Look at how many years it took of Chrysler selling arguably mid- to bottom-pack minivans to lose their first-mover advantage, and those were the years of the "when-not-if" A604 four-speed transmissions.

Whichever designer at Samsung thought that a two-piece mounting bracket for their Frame TVs, that you must align by taping two different pieces of paper template together, was a good idea:

2x6 walls were more expensive to build out but they insulate really, really well when stuffed with 24x6 bats.

The floor is a ground-contact 2x6 framing over a thick plastic vapor barrier, then covered with two layers of 3/4” tongue and groove ply and a single layer of 3/16” luan with a crazy stapling schedule printed on it. I didn’t want it to sound hollow or creak once the LVP went on.

The studio is just 10x12 but I managed to squeeze in a tiny bathroom with a tiny sink and toilet with a single tiny wet wall. Which would be done today except stupid Home Depot dropped the stupid Toto toilet that I ordered and it was cracked and promptly broke into pieces when tightening it down.

A year ago, my wife asked for an outdoor studio/office. I’m almost there. The wall-mounted stand desks go in tomorrow.

I think I’d go for a Q7. But a mid-2000s Rover with the BMW V8 could be a good contender here too.

Friend and I are planning a drive to Prudhoe Bay from Chicago in something that makes success not guaranteed. Something that can be fit with spare tires, Jerry cans, sat phone, winch, LED bars, and hope.

My vote is an OG Cayenne V8 because I liked the Transsyberia. Suggestions? Budget is $10-15k.

My first β€œnew” car was a 1995 Neon that I bought January 28, 1994. It had every option available save ABS and was $14,023.

That is $31,153.70 today. For less of everything than a modern Civic LX.

My β€˜91 Spirit R/T dealer demo was $20,503 ($49,401.89) and a power drivers seat was the big option.

It's worth pointing out that the 1980 Chevy Citation review unit that C/D called "the BEST small car GM ever produced" and which Yates called a "shitbox" in the first graf of his review, which was assembled by a UAW at open war with management, was built to a higher standard than this Model Y.
