I got to wondering if the writer was thinking about recordings? A la Ella Firzgerald, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Mariah Carey, Pentatonix (lol).

To be fair I think it was rarely sung congregationally and usually as a solo, so maybe we just often didn’t get to v. 3?? Or I may just have a poor memory.

When looking at the representative texts on Hymnary, there’s only one version that doesn’t include that line. (Revival Hymns and Choruses 1970)

Maybe this is a Chicago Catholic v Southern Protestant thing because I don’t think I ever heard that verse growing up as a child
