08.01.2026 03:02 β π 3 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0I remember when I uploaded some old pacbio data about 5 years ago it got flagged for containing 'pacbio control DNA', and was removed automatically. Which is why I was surprised so many assemblies if the ONT one made it through and got named as plasmids.
29.12.2025 21:21 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0This stuff is polluting the databases because many technicians just add it because it's in the library prep protocol. That's why I bin it as soon as I receive a new kit. Are NCBI and ENA screening for this yet? If not, they certainly should! Also, do both institutions not have accounts here?!?
29.12.2025 10:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I just recalled some older Nanopore data and started fixing the assembly when I came across a 'weird' contig. Blasting it generated a lot of almost perfect hits to 'plasmids' all across the tree of life. Turns out it was the spike in control DNA that comes with the ONT library prep kit...
29.12.2025 10:11 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0Found another instance of my plasmid/virus, this time in sequencing data of Leptographium pseudotsugae, a fungal pathogen isolated from Oregon pine (Douglas fir). We're up to 11 fungal species carrying it. Still no clue what it is π€·ββοΈ

@tobybarilbio.bsky.social and I are very excited to release MycoMobilome! A very extensive effort to discover, QC and annotate TEs across the fungal kingdom.
π Ready-to-use for your own genome with a simple tutorial!
π Metadata about TEs discovered in your genome!
π Contribute and get recognition!
You spelled "Wil" wrong, as in @wilwheaton.net who also happens to have something interesting to share π I'm excited!

Join us in our CBSM WA 2025 Biodiversity session with invited speaker Dr James PB Lloyd. His talk will focus on the threat of climate change to our global food security and the potential for programmable genetic systems as a solution.

30.07.2025 09:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0At CBSM WA in 2024 we heard from renowned parasitologist Prof Shookofeh Shamsi. Her presentation explored how overlooking parasites can lead to incomplete conclusions about biodiversity. Prof. Shamsi's vision is to create a world where professionals and public are well-informed about parasites.
28.07.2025 02:13 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The CBSM 2024 trade exhibit provided students and researchers the opportunity to create meaningful connections with industry and to discuss the latest and greatest technology available!
