If National Guard troops don’t want to have to look at a bunch of pasty Oregonian butts pedaling in the rain then they should probs stay home 🤷🏻‍♀️

Was gonna say this.

Even if you don’t like them (for good reason); even if they suck as a person.

Criticize the actual things that make them suck; not traits that could apply to folks of any kind of character.

…IDK if my mom is going, but when Trump started his threats about the National Guard in PDX, she said we need a Portland-specific protest symbol, a la DC’s sub sandwich (after someone chucked one at the troops there 😂) & she suggested a pickle.

I informed her today she was on the right track ✅

Watching the football game with the fam yesterday & my dad asks my sister and me if we’re going to the No Kings rally on the 18th, because he’s going and he’s trying to decide what to put on the sign he’s gonna make, and I’m just so proud of my formerly-conservative-leaning boomer parents 🥹🥹🥹

Would’ve been celebrating my 15th anniversary today, if not for that phenomenon where sometimes a person turns out to be very much not who you believed they were.

I guess it was a mistake.

But that joy on my face was as real as the love bursting from my heart.

Nobody can say I didn’t mean it.

Screen shot of text from a post by mattxiv, which reads:
This week, two children lost their father.
In the last two years, 39,000 children in Gaza have lost one or both parents in what has been called “the largest orphan crisis in modern history” - a product of the U.S.-backed political violence Charlie Kirk championed.
If you’re against political violence, please join us in the fight for Palestinians killed by the U.S. war machine, people dying in states with no reproductive healthcare, parents ripped from their children by ICE, and victims of gun violence everywhere- be they schoolchildren or MAGA influencers.
Otherwise, I struggle to believe that you’re “against political violence”. I think you’re just against the death of this one particular guy.

Because no number of violent-yet-preventable deaths- of 1st graders, 9th graders, children attending Mass, concert-goers, mall-shoppers, worshippers in any church/mosque/synagogue, or even 2A extremists with sh*tty opinions and sh*ttier behavior, etc. etc.etc., are ever ENOUGH for ENOUGH of us to say: ENOUGH.

ENOUGH.

Anyway those are MY feelings.

Because it’s a tragedy just to wake up every day in a country where kids can’t even go to school without risking being shot.

Because it’s a tragedy when someone chooses to use the one single life they’ve been given to spread hate and lies and to enrich themselves via the scapegoating and suffering of others.

Because when you lose that one life - which may happen at any moment - that’s all you have to show for it. When you could literally have just chosen the opposite.

Because your kids, who had no say in who their parents would be, now have to try to comprehend your violent death, and must navigate their grief for the rest of their lives within the context of their lost loved one being widely & publicly hated for being hateful.

I don’t have the desire or the audacity or even enough personal inner clarity to try to lecture anyone on how to react or feel today, but I’ll tell you what I’m feeling:

Grief and exasperation.

…Honestly those are basically my main emotions most of the time these days. But I’ll tell you specifically why today.

Because of where we are and how we got here.

Because of every word, choice, and action that has propelled us down this trajectory, to a place where everything is violence; where dehumanization is the primary weapon of choice.

Because multiple students were injured in ANOTHER school shooting today and we’re not even halfway through September and instead of talking about that or god forbid trying to do anything about it or about ANY part of our gun violence problem writ large, we’re all going to spend the day arguing whether to celebrate or mourn the violent death of a bad man (on the left); OR making a martyr out of a bad man and calling for MORE retributive violence (on the right).

Screengrab from a video of an interview by Matt Bernstein (top half of image) with Yona Roseman (bottom half of image), an Israeli transgender teen.

Matt’s caption: “Transgender Israeli teen going to prison for refusing military service explains how Israel uses ‘LGBTQ rights’ as a shield to commit war crimes”.

My caption: “Someone give Matt a Peabody already

I’m becoming convinced that demon possession is a real phenomenon. Because the level and variety of pain, distress, & general wild nonsense happening in this body at any given moment lately is VERY WOW and I’m basically expecting that scene from “Alien” to manifest through me (literally) any second.

An aerial view of Gaza, a gray landscaping of buildings bombed to rubble.

Caption below reads: this image was smuggled out of an aid plane flying over Gaza. Israel does not allow journalists on those planes (or anywhere in gaza) because this is what we would see.

Another image very similar to the first.

Caption continues: Israel does not allow journalists into Gaza because one day, when they have no choice, the rest of the world will be forced to reckon with what happened there. We will see that it was never about “saving hostages.” We will see that there were no “precision strikes.” We will see that it wasn’t about Israel “defending itself”. We will see what many have always known: it was about flattening Gaza, taking over its land, and killing its people slowly enough that the rest of the world could deny what was happening until it was too late.

Yet another similar image of Gaza destroyed.

Caption continues: I will never forget the university presidents who withheld the diplomas of students who protested this. I will never forget the media people who laundered it and the politicians who abetted it so they wouldn’t lose their campaign funding. I hope it haunts them. I hope they hear the wails of Palestinian mothers holding their limp, starving children in every dream they ever have. And even then, there is no justice. Free Palestine.

I know this sounds strange, but my first thought when I saw these photos was the children’s book series “where’s Waldo”. The scale of destruction is so vast and impossible to wrap your head around that it tricks your brain the same way those books do to children: each structure appears so tiny that we lose sight of its individual-ness. But we must fight that instinct. Every window of every collapsed building in these images represents an entire universe: a young couple planning their wedding, a university student practicing law, children playing outside their parents’ storefront. Hundreds of thousands of unique dreams, relationships, and human minds forever destroyed. A million little stains on our collective humanity that will never wash out.
