By which I mean they need to be destroyed and something better built in their place

I think we need to frame these moves as a deep betrayal of society itself. We need to keep a list, and when we have power again, these institutions need to be held accountable for what they’ve done

The original Far Side Cow Tools Cartoon by Gary Larson. A cow stands on its hind legs behind a table, staring blankly at the viewer from behind its heavy brow ridge. On the table are four crudely made tools: a lump, a lump with an offset crooked handle, a long stick with hooked prongs at the end, and a crude handsaw with irregular teeth. In the background a barn sits on a hill. Caption reads, "Cow tools."

I try not to get too worked up about politicians and candidates I can’t vote for β€” and Platner’s work for Blackwater should’ve been disqualifying even before the tattoo stuff came out β€” but I also can’t help but think this too. Can we trust his politics are sincere?

For the 100th time: if you traveled back in time to 2001 and told everyone randy Johnson was an extremely cool, normal guy, and curt schilling turned out to be the psychopath, I think you’d get laughed out the room

Administrators at Indiana University baselessly fired the student media director and ordered the student paper to cease its print edition, so it'd sure be a shame if this excellent digital front page were to be widely shared today

"What if, in the process of trying to ban AI products that quite actually encourage children to kill themselves, we wind up banning chatbots that help children cheat on their homework, diminish their propensity for critical thought, and lead to the development of other forms of AI psychosis?"

Only Democrats have agency, despite the GOP controlling all of government

The media company that can figure out how to produce news or news adjacent video content without relying on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, broadcast TV, cable, or corporate streamers will make a billion dollars and probably help save American democracy β€” or exist long enough to document its end

I would add to this *stop using Meta products and X altogether.* You can’t fight fascism with the tools controlled by fascists.

Far more dangerous than Trump, I think, is how quickly the last eight months have pulled back the curtain on America's elites and shown everyone how venal, how cowardly and how utterly mediocre the foundation of our society has been.

I remember reading both Klein and Yglesias when they were still in college. Klein wrote a lot but it never held my attention; too boring. Yglesias wrote a lot too and he’s a much better writer, but ultimately kind of empty. I’d never have predicted the kind of influence Klein now has

When you publish a website that posts the names and photos of scholars who have written or said things you disagree with and encourage people to surveil and harass them, you are not, in fact, a β€œfree speech” organization.

rarely have I more acutely felt the dynamic by which Dems are held responsible for the rhetoric of every random left-leaning person on the internet and Republicans are not even asked to answer for their own personal words

Conservatives get something valuable out of keeping liberals in their life, so there’s less incentive for them to shut people out

An important difference between conservatism and liberalism these days is that β€œbeing shitty to people you disagree with” is an explicit, widely shared social value in conservatism but there’s no equivalent in liberalism. It’s just easier and more preferred for liberals to walk away

Pentagon officials were still working Wednesday on what legal authority they would tell the public was used to back up the extraordinary strike in international waters.

One thing I feel like everyone needs to understand: those social-democratic Scandinavian nations we're all jealous of? Their market economies are *less regulated* than ours. More free. It's just that they collect a lot of taxes on the back end & fund social services & infrastructure.
