That also reminds me of how I first started getting into the indie RPG scene. I began by doing illustrations and layouts for free minimalist RPGs that I loved but which were overlooked because they lacked visual appeal. It was genuinely sad to me that such great games just flew under the radar.

I haven’t made a character sheet for MΓΆrk Borg yet, but I plan to someday. ^^

Wow, that brings back memories of endless debates with people who dismissed so-called β€œartpunk” as a pejorative term. Some folks seem unable to understand that a game also communicates through what isn’t written. Visual style and art say a lot and have an incredible power to immerse when used well.

Character sheet for the Brazilian urban fantasy RPG "Era do Caos".

This one was a bit different from what I’ve done in recent years, since I used digital fonts and vectors instead of drawing all the elements by hand.

Thanks, Vukas! I just drew this one for fun. I was in a bit of a DCC / Black Sword Hack vibe this morning. ^^

Maybe people feel intimidated competing for attention with those polished products, or perhaps they think it’s not worth the effort? I can’t really say.

It truly was a moment of vibrant creativity that I also miss. There are still many creative people out there, but their numbers seem reduced. I feel like a lot of the "DIY spirit" has been lost in favor of materials with a more professional approach.

A digital illustration of a mallard dressed as a Brazilian cangaceira from the Northeast. She looks annoyed, with one hand on her hip and the other gripping the hilt of a long sword planted in the ground. A small cactus stands beside her, and the sun is in the sky. A horizon line is traced in the background, but the setting is only suggested, not detailed. The border and page texture follow the Dragonbane book style, and it says at the top: "desenhe um marreco" in Portuguese.

*(Translator’s note: "cangaceira" refers to a female bandit/fighter from Brazil’s northeastern backlands in the 19th–20th centuries; "desenhe um marreco" means "draw a duck" in a casual, informal sense.)*

Template with Dragonbane texture and frame for the "draw a duck and share your art" challenge. In the center of the frame, a duck's beak, eye, and feet are shown, with the rest of the body left blank to be completed. At the top of the frame, the text reads: "Draw a mallard and share your art".

Thanks! I found the movie really fun, given its unpretentious vibe. It's a nicely bad movie. ^^

Unfinished illustration of Deathstalker in his 2025 portrayal facing a two-headed troll that is holding Doodad, the goblin wizard and the hero's friend, hostage. In the background, Brisbayne watches the scene while playing his flute.

Poster for Deathstalker (1983) illustrated by Boris Vallejo. The composition depicts the protagonist confronting a troll who holds a woman hostage in its right hand while raising a mace with its left hand, poised to strike. In the background, another troll approaches the hero with a mace, ready to attack.

Unfinished Deathstalker (2025) fanart, inspired by Boris Vallejo's poster for the 1983 film. Unfortunately, I got lazy and lost interest in finishing it.

Thanks, towershade! Yeah, I made those two with the vibe of those old Shadowrun books I love so much in mind. Recently came across Lowlife 2090 and really felt like running it. ^^

I’ve noticed a recurring trend on Discord where beginner illustrators reach out via DMs to offer their services. More than 5 people have already offered me services this way, and a friend of mine has been approached by over 10! Is this some trend I’m out of the loop on? Where did this start? (1)

Talislanta for Troika! by Barely Playtested 131 Talislantan Troika Archetypes

I went through a hyperfocus phase with Talislanta for a few weeks but never got to actually play it. I love the setting's vibe and was really tempted to try Barely Playtested's Troika conversion.

To be fair, Krita also has very capable tools for this, but it's never been particularly intuitive, unfortunately.

CSP is excellent. It's an app that streamlines many steps of the process, but it's expensive. Based on my brief experience with earlier versions of the Affinity suite, I can find all the features I need from CSP in it: drawing tools, vectors, text, multi-page management, etc. All for free now.
