Someone is going to have the write the thing about how β€œvibe” has become a substitute for meaningful theory in a world where the theory is so clear β€” grift and power β€” but we collectively refuse if because it isn’t sophisticated enough to generate make work for empiricists.

"Learn emotional regulation or leave me alone."

Now *that* is a motto.

2 paragraphs from Emma Bull's _Territory_, when one of the main characters is learning to be a reporter in one of Tombstone, Arizona's newspapers:

She read them as he waited. He'd re-moved words as a gardener might prune the topiary. He'd cut phrases that separated facts from their meaning. He'd made work-manlike sentences graceful, and made halting paragraphs flow. She'd thought he was making her work his own. Instead he'd made it into what she'd meant it to be.
She handed the pages back. No, not pages - *copy*. "I see." What she wanted to say was, "I have been given a revelation," but she didn't think Richard Rule would be comfortable in the role of a literary burn-ing bush.

My favorite version of this is from Emma Bull's _Territory_, wherein one of the main characters is learning the ropes as a reporter in Tombstone, Arizona:

I resent spending my time rooting around user interfaces to turn off the AI. I should track these as billable hours and invoice Sam Altman. Wasting my time in a way slaveholders could have only dreamed of owning my labor.

Give a man a fish and someone with a thousand fishes is going to bitch about people getting free handouts. Teach a man to fish? Yeah, that person with a thousand fishes is going to bitch about that too.

The crisis of elite impunity that is ruining our society cannot be more clearly or convincingly demonstrated than with the fact that all of these people wrote all this stuff into an email and hit Send.

The Epstein story gets a something that is tearing at the heart of the electorate: elite impunity. The idea that wealthy and powerful people can do terrible things *at scale* and face no consequences for them. Whatever political party actually stops it could rule the country for a generation.

I was at an event yesterday where Rand Paul spoke via video and talked about how great it was to send ACA money "directly to the people" so that they could work collectively to get better deals on health care.

it’s ironic how nothing makes you sound more like you live in a weird little bubble than when you make the bizarre assumption that liberals in big cities have never interacted with a conservative before

JD Vance claims that diversity weakens unions, as people end up distrusting each other and not organizing.

Let me tell you two menswear stories related to this claim. 🧡

A spitfire of truth by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social that all should read.

β€œPoor people can be self-determined. They prove it every day, mostly by surviving while being poor in a country that is mean and nasty and hostile to them.” www.nytimes.com/2025/10/29/o...

A post from Xitter by @MarkLevineNYC, caption "Every person in American Politics should be forced to look at this map"

An image of the united states broken down into 2 colors, red and light blue, each of which contributes 50% to GDP. The light blue are small-area, large-population metro areas like SF, LA, Boston, NYC-Philadelpha-Washington, Chicago, Raleigh-Durham, Seattle, etc.

I mask at work in corridors and elevators - and then occasionally come into a conference room and get overwhelmed when I take off my mask. I can't even tell if it's perfume or cologne, it's so thick.

(Doctor friends tell me that a perfume spritz is an approved testing method for mask fit.)

So much of "cancel culture" discourse is a re-description of the normal functioning of a democracy and public discourse by people who didn't like the results of one, or both, or how it made them feel.
