One of my friends, who DMs games I'm in and is a player in a few of mine, describes our relationship as 'an emotional cold war where we are constantly preparing to launch character trauma missiles at one another'

Which is close, but cold war might imply we aren't launching them constantly.

It always depends on the table/party, but it really is always fun to unpack.

I am steadily realizing my favorite tabletop theme for a party to deal with is, to varying degrees, the 'curse of insight.'

Once you see beyond the world as most people do, you *always* see more, and so much of it is terrifying. Because you know it's there, now it is your responsibility, etc.

And I get it! It's why I always just kinda smile and go along with it, because embarrassing someone who is excited about their art is never the point.

But every so often we pass an event horizon and I stare in wonder and terror at the depths of such blind confidence.

I stare at them with this deep understand of what it must have been like to be an oil prospector, desperately welling in the desert, for I wish I could harvest this blind confidence and refine it for the use of so many students I've had over the years who were great but just needed to *feel it*.
