This is correct. NIH can’t award grants if the institutes are dismantled.

Musk and Trump get their hands off NIH or they will kill the cancer cures and economic advantages created by the US’s world-leading science enterprise.

Excerpt from Rutgers University Senate resolution calling for a Mutual Academic Defense Compact. The excerpt reads: "BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Rutgers University Senate urges the President of Rutgers University to formally propose and help establish a Mutual Academic Defense Compact (MADC) among all members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, under this compact, all participating institutions shall commit meaningful funding to a shared or distributed defense fund. This fund shall be used to provide immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement;"

This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

As an ER doctor, I treat people when other systems fail. Now, we're watching those systems get dismantled on purpose: 20,000 jobs slashed at HHS. Vaccine and prevention programs gutted. And Congressional Republicans voting to cut Medicaid to fund billionaire tax breaks. 1/10

The challenge with public health is that when it works, it’s invisible. We don’t hear about the cancer caught early, the child who didn’t get sick, or the outbreak contained. But when funding gets pulled and systems break down, consequences become fast-and by then, it may be too late.

The NIH firing plan is really a radical institute merger and an authoritarian takeover this is an Orbanization of US science: a move to exert political control over discovery, which will kill the US medical research industry and end cancer cures. The plan must be stopped. We can act.

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.

This is how our government has been corrupted: 

1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office. 
2) Elected officials rewrite the rules in the donors' favor. 
3) Donors make a huge profit. 
4) Repeat.

For the sake of democracy, we must get Big Money out of politics.
