Missed work yesterday bc of health issues. Dr wanted me to increase my medication, but it makes me sleep. He prescribed a secondary that won't make me sleepy. Of course it knocks me out, too. Meanwhile work gets more stressful because I'm not there and stress is a trigger. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I used to say I couldn't understand the way medical providers treat patients (or more accurately, don't), but then someone started explaining the sin of #empathy to me and it was like a light turning on in the dark. #chronicillness #healthcare

Happy #flowersonfriday - here's a butterfly on my wildflowers. I'm starting my day listening to the birds grey the sun and sipping coffee on the porch. There's a rather vociferous Scarlet tanager competing with the local titmouse population for loudest call and honestly I think it's winning.

Better working conditions, public health strategies, societal supports for mental and physical health, equity attainment. Sociology laid the foundation. Not useless; essential. I think it's pretty clear who wants you to believe that it's a wasted degree.

During COVID, sociologists advised on how trust and social networks shape public health behavior. They influenced how officials rolled out masks, distancing, and vaccines.

Sociologists reframed poverty during the Great Depression. They showed it wasn’t about moralsβ€”it was access: jobs, education, healthcare. That logic drove the New Deal.

The 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act didn’t appear in a vacuum. Sociologists and reformers gathered the data that exposed wage abuse, child labor, and prison exploitation. Their work gave the FLSA moral forceβ€”and political cover.

In the late 1800s, Charles Booth mapped poverty across London. Seebohm Rowntree followed in York. Their data showed working full-time didn’t prevent poverty. That shattered the β€œlazy poor” myth.

Think sociology is useless? You’re living in a world built by it. Labor laws, mental health care, even how we define povertyβ€”all shaped by sociologists. Let’s talk history. 🧡
