Headline in today's Guardian that reads "Reading and writing can lower dementia risk by almost 40 percent, study finds. Cognitive health in later life is 'strongly influenced' by lifelong exposure to intellectually stimulating environments, say researchers."
This is why you need to be reading books and writing your own emails, by the way. When you outsource your thinking abilities, you risk turning your brain into soup. Heavy dependence on AI has already been linked with severe cognitive decline. What you don’t use, you will lose.

‘It’s like a gift from God’: undocumented foreign workers welcome Spanish amnesty
Half a million migrants will be ‘regularised’ under plans to boost economic growth that have angered rightwing parties
Humane and sensible step move by Spain in facilitating irregular migrants and asylum seekers to move to work with decent pay, social security and tax payments. Predictably the right is grumbling - unlike the UK, the govt isn’t allowing this to set their policies www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Archaeological finds from the planned HS2 train line have been shown exclusively to the BBC.
Ok who do I have to bribe with stroopwafels to get access to this place?
I promise I won't steal or even touch anything and will only be being weird and talking to the artefacts like a silly old history addict.

Corollary to @faineg.bsky.social's discourse on "good tech needs no begging to adopt": when the humble web browser has become so encumbered by AI features that an article about using the command line to run GitHub scripts to shut them off is viral news amongst normies, it's a full repudiation of AI.

Here’s a question for non-native German speakers. Do you ever (even years into learning German) suddenly consider the literal meaning of a word.
Today it was ‘abgespeckt’ to mean ‘slimmed down’. Literally ‘ent-baconed’ - with the fat taken out.
It just occurred to me and made me laugh.

Photograph from 1911 taken by Herbert Ponting whilst with Scott's Antarctic Expedition
The monochrome photo is taken from within a cave. The walls of the cave are made of ice. The cave entrance is in the mid distance with two figures standing looking out towards a distant ship. Between them and the ship there is first a 'beach' of ice before the sea itself. The ship could be up to 800 metres away
What makes the photo so special is that where the figures are at the cave entrance there is a band of very white snow and ice (contrasting with the comparatively dark inside of the cave) that creates a stark framework in which the men and the ship are captured. It is made even more dramatic by the fact that the cave entrance is at least 30 metres high and is in the shape of a distorted elipse with the tail sloping off to the right at the top of the elipse
The photo being in monochrome in a largely white environment makes the photographers skill all the more laudable
This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,
The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance
Iconic imo

In frustration, the Russians decided to push their luck. They informed Romania that a transport plane would shortly be entering their airspace, permission or not.
“You could do that.” The Romanian Defence Minister, Victor Babuic told Russian Foreign Minister Ivanov over the phone. “Of course we would be obliged to send up an aircraft to intercept your aircraft.”
Babuic pointed out that in such tense situations, accidents often happen. He couldn’t guarantee that the pilot wouldn’t mistakenly shoot the Russians down.
“Of course this is a crime.” Babuic said, apologetically. “He would be prosecuted under our law, and he would be sent to jail for seven years.”
He paused for effect.
“But he would also be a national hero.” He added, thoughtfully.
The warning worked. No further attempts to reinforce the Russian contingent at the airport were made.
Okay as the original publisher is long since gone, here is a version of the (award winning at the time!) thing I wrote on the Pristina Airport incident back in the day.
Note Putin's role. Also worth it for this bit of sassiness by the Romanian Foreign Minister.

Horses: The 6 Facts You Need to Know
1. The fastest thing in the world is either the speed of light or a horse.
Scientists have not been able to determine which is faster yet because
they are both very fast.
2. A horse can run faster than a man. Therefore, getting a piggyback
from a man will not fully prepare you for the speed of horseriding.
3. Most horses are unable to read so if you wish to communicate with
a horse, don't waste your time writing a note or sending an email.
4. The majority of horses have no concept of time. So if a horse neglects to wish you happy birthday or happy Christmas, don't take it personally.
5. I heard a rumour once which claimed that horses have x-ray vision and it enables them to see through 3 layers of clothing. I don't know if it's true but I always wear 4 layers of clothes when there are horses around, just to be on the safe side.
6. Horses struggle to walk up and down flights of stairs so if you need
something from upstairs, it's faster to get it yourself.
There are 6 known facts about every animal (except dolphins, for which there are only 5). Here are the horse facts

Shit I learned:

Then look at the surface of Mars.
Then look up to the top right.
Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.
Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.
That's Earth.
