Busy Bee, the tortoiseshell/calico kitten, sits at the top of the stairs looking kind of startled. Her orange eyes are wide and her ears perked up as if listening intently.

Busy loves to lay on the stairs landing so she can see everything going on. This is her typical facial expression: eyes wide, looking sort of bewildered. My partner teases her saying “Where are your eyelids?” 😂🤔

Fiona (I pronounce it fee-oh-NUH 😆), the floofy black kitten, lounging on an armchair. Her front legs are stretched out in front of her and she has tufts of hair between her toes.

Today was tough, but it definitely helps to have the kittens around. I would really lose it if our house was now empty — but instead, we have two little ladies to love, care for, and laugh at.

Klein the orange and white kitty looking bright eyed and alert. In the picture he is lying in his favorite spot, the same spot where he breathed his final breath.

Klein passed away this morning at 10 EST. He was comfortable, safe, and cuddled until the end. We’re totally devastated.

Klein was born into our family and lived a full life knowing nothing but love. It feels like an era of our lives is over now that he & Schmoopis are gone.

Klein made it through the night. We weren’t sure he would. 99% of his time is spent sleeping or lying still with his eyes half closed, his breathing rapid and shallow. I slept on the couch near him.

We’re probably going to get in touch with an at-home euthanasia vet today and say our goodbyes.

Seems like we are going to lose him either way, cancer or not.

I can’t believe how sudden this was, very like when Schmoopis passed. One day he’s fine and the next we are facing a probable terminal illness.

Just three months (a couple days over) after Schmoopis died August 26.

Klein is home. Vet said next step would be to aspirate his enlarged spleen and biopsy bone marrow for cancer.

I couldn’t leave him alone and scared at the hospital while we wait ‘til Sunday when the sonographer is in. He may only have a handful of days left and I want him to be home with us. 💔

Per the vet it might be pancreatitis, some sort of GI issue, cancer.

They will observe him and may get a specialist involved. If he,s still not eating, might put in a feeding tube.

Im terrified of what awful decision we may have to make—and I’m grateful we didn’t bring home an empty cat carrier.

Klein update:

We took him to the ER vet last night around 10:30 - I couldn’t watch him gulp/gag and very obviously be in pain.

The vet couldn’t find anything stuck in his throat, no intestinal blockage, his labs are normal…

We decided to admit him to their hospital so he can be monitored.

Diarrhea, extreme lethargy (walking only, very slowly, head down/tail down), clearing his throat, gulping, hoarse voice, no appetite (even with the appetite stim).

Just now we got him to eat one of those gravy pouches, and he has been drinking water.

Thanks for having my back about the house! Things have been a lot busier than it has been around here in…well, years. We love having new members of the family, but it does tire me out sometimes. ☺️

It is DEFINITELY a rare thing to have the girls (especially Busy - I didn’t know just how on-the-nose her name is!) resting peacefully.

As for sweet old Klein, last night was the first day that he’s allowed himself to sleep in their presence. Until now he’s been always on guard with them around. 🧡
