Infographic with bright colors. Title says: Activation Parenting Strategies and Relations with Child Self-Regulation and Engagement. The left box says: Fathers' and mothers' responses to child distress that encourage kids to face challenges were linked to flexibility & frustration tolerance and curiosity & persistence. In the middle, there is a laptop with a screen that says: 66 dads & 612 moms of 2- to 5-year-olds in the US completed surveys. There is another box under that that says: Associations held after controlling for the significant effects of other supportive responses. The right side has a sticky note that says: Beyond traditional supportive practices, parents may promote their children's socioemotional development through activation parenting. The citation for the article is at the bottom: Feldman et al. (2025), Journal of Family Psychology.

Gen Z, and low budget people, are asked to reject ALL the pleasures of a consumer society while also being bombarded by commercial messages telling them buying stuff will make them happy.

No conflict there. Nope. None at all.

Who's the man behind President Trump's dismantling of the federal government? In a New Yorker article co-published withΒ ProPublica, reporter Andy Kroll describes Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, as a "shadow president" with oversized influence.

NEW: I spoke with the inestimable Terry Gross (!) on @nprfreshair.bsky.social about my year-long investigation of Russ Vought, the "shadow president" of Trump's second presidency.

Screenshot from the article that reads: Hurley was a bit halting and clearly embarrassed. He apologized repeatedly and noted that when he didn’t hear back after an attempt to find me through my website, he searched online for contact info. He apparently chose an e-mail to try, got a response, conducted the entire β€œinterview” via e-mail, and never bothered to confirm the identity of whom he was communicating with. No phone call, no Zoom, nothing.

This explanation and apology doesn’t add up, unless a previously well-respected outlet has abandoned meaningful journalistic standards and ethics. Did their conservative bent cloud their judgment? Did someone cleverly lay a trap for them? Or was this just shoddy work by a journalist and his editors who were supposed to maintain quality control?

Screenshot from the article that reads: Every journalist who immediately took The Times’ story on face value and commented online, despite its evident disconnect from everything they knew about me and my views, unfortunately enabled the spread of a falsehood.

The ones who exercised thoughtful discretion and came to me for confirmation helped protect their readers from literal, actual fake news.

Let the reader beware. And let us allβ€”news consumers and journalists alikeβ€”demand better.
