The shifting cultural understanding of the Menendez brothers, who were mocked at the time for saying their father abused them, is an interesting synecdoche for the larger threat that treating children as though they have emotional lives and agency presents to the project of the American right.

This isnโ€™t new, per this article: The executive director of an NY-based org. advocating for expanding access to legal representation for immigrant children said that before the contract was terminated, she saw 30% to 40% of kids in a given docket without lawyers. Now she said itโ€™s 50% to 60%.

I grew up in this town and visit regularly. About 16,000 people live here, and Iโ€™ve never seen/heard of a protest of this size before.

Anecdotes only, but seems like the questions/worries about โ€œwhere are the protestsโ€ have quieted somewhat.

Text of part of the linked article from the New Bedford Light:

โ€œRoll down the window so we can talk,โ€ another agent insisted, while Mรฉndezโ€™s wife asked if they had an arrest warrant for her or her husband.

The tense standoff took about 30 minutes. The couple were taken from their car after an agent smashed in the rear right window.

โ€œThey pulled us out violently. They treated us very harshly,โ€ Mรฉndezโ€™s wife recalled through tears.

So, here, in short, is what the Justice Department is offering the federal judiciary as a constitutionally sound option for migrants who say they face illegal deportation to El Salvador.
These migrants have no right to contest their classification as gang members. They have no right to challenge the president's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act or secure a classwide
restraining order against it. Their access to the courts is limited to an individual habeas petition in their district of confinement, which cannot practically address their grievances. Moreover, the government has no obligation to give migrants time-even just a few hours-to file a habeas petition or access to a lawyer or interpreter who could help. The government may, instead, whisk them away to El Salvador with no advance notice. And as soon as they are delivered to CECOT, they can no longer file a habeas petition, because they are out of U.S. custody.

The Justice Departmentโ€™s latest filings make it abundantly clear that it is creating a black site for migrants in El Salvador thatโ€™s worse than Gitmo. slate.com/news-and-pol...
