Prof. Leonard Kleinrock pioneered the application of queuing theory to modelling message switching networks in his (Ph.D. thesis and) book, "Communication Nets: Stochastic Message Flow and Delay". This was based on a simulation program which he wrote on the MIT Lincoln Laboratory TX-2 computer.

Terry Leahy proposed a loyalty card at Tesco in 1993, but execs were nervous. Leahy was successful and so the modern data-mining-driven loyalty card was born.

Restoring it was a giant pain for them; Ian described the pain, but there's not enough space in a comment to quote his description of the, er, saga.
I don't think I dare read such a book. Since probably half the books I read after it will make me emit tutting and sighing noises.
