I can’t watch American TV news anymore. I haven’t watched it in years! I’m convinced a good number of the anchors and reporters are failed actors who got into news to be on TV. I say this as someone who majored in TV broadcasting. (I didn’t want to be on camera).

Andy Fillmore says 'nothing is off the table' when it comes to making cuts in Halifax budget - Halifax Examiner Council votes in favour of mayor's motion to consider options for financial restraint.

Halifax regional council started the budget process yesterday. Mayor Andy Fillmore introduced a motion that asks council to look at specific ways to make cuts.

Council will need a vacation after this budget process. So will I.

Toronto has to raise property taxes.. But guess what? They just opened another CITY run nonprofit daycare and it only costs &22/day (and is gorgeous). I’d rather you raise my taxes and start acting like a real city with real services..

If tech bros weren’t these younger, smiling, clean-cut white guys strutting into communities with a big idea, would we be having these conversations?

The people who don't want to raise the tax rate are the same people who say, "no one wants to work anymore."

“Nothing is off the table,” concludes Mayor Fillmore. “But through constructive conversations around the Council table and a focus on delivering our core services, I believe we can make decisions that are both responsible and compassionate.” END

This motion was adopted, and the Budget Committee will make further decisions on these items in the coming months. /6

At today’s Budget Committee meeting, Mayor Fillmore presented a motion that tasked municipal staff to find further savings. This includes exploring a 10% cut to program grants, reducing the Climate Action Tax by one-third, and implementing a staffing freeze. /5

“These additional costs are simply too high for residents,” continues Mayor Fillmore. “Every decision we make must reflect the realities our residents face.” /4

That bare-bones budget includes an increase of $88.9 million – or an average tax bill increase of approximately 10.5%.

This would come on top of potential 2.4% rate increase from Nova Scotia Power and a 36% increase from Halifax Water. /3

In April 2025, Mayor Fillmore presented a motion directing municipal staff to develop a bare-bones budget with the only increases coming from unavoidable expenses – such as inflation, contractual obligations, and mandatory provincial contributions. /2

“Affordability is the top concern for everyone right now. Our job at City Hall must be to reduce the property tax burden on residents as much as possible." /1

People don't understand this whole process. I am still learning it! There needs to be a way to break down the math to help people better understand what "affordability" really means.

I think council has priorities but then Fillmore has his own priorities.
