This is absolutely a fallacy, but I think it’s an instinct-level belief for most people. We don’t want to give control over our safety to strangers unless there’s adequate propaganda that socially-programmed that amount of trust into us. We trust flawed institutions because they have better PR.

I think most folks’ instinct is that they’re more competent than “the stranger” at preserving their own safety.
I’m the one driving the car, and I’m invested in my own survival (I made it this far), ergo that’s “safer” than trusting the train.
Nevermind the contrary evidence, of course.

I know this month has been rough because I'm just now realizing it's Halloween, a day that I normally anticipate for weeks.
Just no time to even think about it. No time to think about anything. Pushing through a sense of unreality.

Accusing Jordan Silverman A D.C. teaching assistant was accused of molesting up to 15 kids. Multiple law enforcement agencies cleared him. But his nightmare was just beginning.

New from me:

Elite law firms, multiple media outlets, the D.C. attorney general, and a group of parents accused a teacher of molesting 15 kids. They were wrong.

This piece is two-and-a-half years in the making. And as you'll see, it took some incredible turns, even as I was reporting it.

An uncomfortable truth is that a lot of religions condition their followers to be predisposed towards authoritarianism. I know that's a hard pill to swallow, but there's a reason State officials treat themselves like priests, why political conversion is conducted via church. The machinery is there.

As a teen in the late 90s, and at college in the 2000s, I often heard conservatives say that "A benevolent dictatorship is better than a democracy." And I mean word-for-word, many times, different people.
Was that just a local phenomenon? Because it's why I'm not surprised by the "plenary" thing.

And just like that, "Plenary" is in the running for every dictionary's Word of the Year.
